* 12/yy/24 - Vote of the membership on this budget - read?.

== Background ==

This year of 2024 over $300k came in. 2025 I expect over $400k. Some of that money has to be spent on things such as rent and electricity and some of it the membership gets to decide how to spend it, but not the amounts reserved for the building and budgetary buffer in the case of unexpected expenses.

PS1 History lesson:

At first, everything was a member vote, even things like "pay the rent"

[citation needed]
At some point it was decided this was ridiculous and the board was given the authority to make sure the rent got paid. And other things we can call Operational Expenses. Make sure PS1 continued to exist such that there was a place and the bare necessities. Anything optional required a vote.

Reimburse Patrick for the lamp $153.74 - Passed [Board_Meeting_Notes_2011-05-17]

Which was fine as there wasn't enough money to buy lots of things, and everyone knew that, so there were not very many votes to buy things.

As PS1 grew, there was more money to spend, which meant more votes. Great!

At some point it was decided to consolidate: Each Area Host could run a vote and get a budget for the year. [citation needed]

And later it was decided to consolidate all these votes into one big budget vote, and here we are.

There does not have to be any money allocated for additional votes, and as the organizations financial position changes we will have more or less money to work with.

The budget spreadsheet is to help predict, but not define how money will be spent. Only what is in the language of this vote does.

=== Aims ===

This budget is designed with the following goals:

* Set aside funds for other emergency expenses such as health and safety, building maintenance/improvements/code compliance, and city occupancy.
* Authorize the Board to spend money on normal administrative expenses not already authorized by the bylaws.
* Predict expenditures based on a conservative membership model that shows 0% growth based on this November membership.

=== Additional Notes ===

* All the numbers: [https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1YQp5S1O9fWlwi0376IMbfVBQkvq6GHO-CChKtbTxd5I/edit?usp=sharing 2025 Budget worksheet]
* We are on track to buy the building, but that is still over a year away. We could go off the rails and mess that up. Let's try not to up that mess.
* If things get better, great. The building will be ours if we don't up mess.
* If things get worse, the membership and or the board can make adjustments.
* The much asked for Contingency Fund (previously called Savings Requirement) is back, now with new words.

== Background ==

=== Aims ===

=== Additional Notes ===

The situation is about chaos. People who don't follow the rules create chaos.

If you go to different people to get permission to not follow the rules, chaos.

To people following the rules, seeing special treatment is chaos. You know what happens then, those people leave because special treatment is frustrating. Usually these are good people.

Meanwhile this chaos agent keeps creating more problems for the organization and more people leave.

PS1 keeps a non-compliant person and the rule followers are gone and upset. Yes, it is personal, do not create chaos in your actions. Do not put things everywhere and then moan and groan about them being moved or red ticketed.

The red ticket is a chance to correct and change. Used any other way and it is ineffective. We are 700+ members, one bad faith member can burnout volunteers, and empty out an organization. Don't be that. Don't let others be that.
== Background ==

This year of 2024 over $300k came in. 2025 I expect over $400l.

At some point it was decided this was ridiculous and the board was given the authority to make sure the rent got paid. And other things we can call Operational Expenses. Make sure PS1 continued to exist such that there was a place and the bare necessities. Anything optional required a vote.

== Background ==

This year of 2024 over $300k came in. 2025 I expect over $400l.

=== Aims ===

=== Additional Notes ===

== Background ==

This year of 2024 over $300k came in. 2025 I expect over $400l. Some of that money has to be spent on things such as rent and electricity and some of it the membership gets to decide how to spend it, but not the amounts reserved for the building and budgetary buffer in the case of unexpected expenses.

=== Aims ===

* 12/yy/24 - Vote of the membership on this budget - read?.

== Background ==

This year of 2024 over $300k came in. 2025 I expect over $400l. Some of that money has to be spent on things such as rent and electricity and some of it the membership gets to decide how to spend it, but not the amounts reserved for the building and budgetary buffer in the case of unexpected expenses.

=== Aims ===

=== Additional Notes ===

* The much asked for [Savings Requirement] is back, with some new words.
== Background ==

This year of 2024 over $300k came in. 2025 I expect over $400l. Some of that money has to be spent on things such as rent and electricity and some of it the membership gets to decide how to spend it, but not the amounts reserved for the building and budgetary buffer in the case of unexpected expenses.

=== Aims ===

* We are on track to buy the building, but that is still over a year away. We could go off the rails and mess that up. Let's try not to up that mess.
* If things get better, great. The building will be ours if we don't up mess.
* If things get worse, the membership and or the board can make adjustments.
* The much asked for [Savings Requirement] is back, with some new words.
= Voting =

Pumping Station: One is a member-run organization, driven by membership vote.

Voting is a process established in the [[Bylaws]] and promulgated by the Board of Directors. As of February 22, 2020, all members may write a proposal for a vote, and so long as it is possible to vote it "up or down" ... meaning that it must be phrased so that a voter can vote for, against, or abstain; it cannot be essay format or multiple choice or anything other than yes or no.

The vote language is circulated well before the vote for community review, generally by posting on the PS1 wiki and linked to on Google Groups, for commentary, support, dissent, editing and for other sponsors to attach themselves to the vote. It is recommended that you post this at least seven days before locking the language.

Please aim to have two or more cosponsors. This is highly encouraged to ensure votes are supported by the community rather than just one individual.

Once the vote language has been refined and either a consensus has been achieved (de facto) or the sponsors decide simply that they wish to freeze the vote language and put the matter before the Membership, the language is locked and the vote is displayed on the PS1 wiki for review. After some time has passed, but at least 5 days the vote date is announced, by the Secretary, and a survey monkey link is sent to each member.

An official Member Meeting must be announced for a vote. At the Member Meeting, the Secretary takes attendance, and at the designated time the vote is closed. The Secretary, will then announce if quorum has been met, and if it has, the outcome of the vote. The results are binding on the organization and the Board of Directors is obligated to carry out whatever elements of the vote require their action, including but not limited to writing checks or making other payments.

= Bylaws Section on Voting Process =
III.10.d  Voting Process.

i. A member proposing a vote (the vote Sponsor) must write the vote proposal using the template on the Pumping Station: One wiki page, collect two (2) co-sponsors of the vote, post the proposal to the appropriate wiki page, and post notice of the vote to the current official communication channel. The Member must submit the vote as a written proposal to the Board. Email is considered written.

ii. The Sponsor shall make their proposal available on the wiki for public review and comment. The Sponsor may choose to open the language of the vote for suggested edits. Suggestions for edits can be made in a shared document or other collaborative vehicle until the language is locked. The Sponsor may stop taking input at any time.

iii. The proposal made available for review shall include the entire language of the vote and the entire text of any ancillary documents. If the Sponsor of the proposal so chooses, changes from member feedback may be accepted in the language during the review period.

iv. On receipt of the request for a vote, the Secretary shall schedule the vote for a Tuesday within seven (7) to twenty-one (21) days and announce the vote date in the communications channel.

v. The language of the proposal locks when the Secretary attaches a PDF of the entire language of the proposal and its ancillary documents to the email ballot. When the ballot is emailed to the membership, the Secretary will make an announcement in the current official communication channel to notify members that the ballot has been emailed. At this point, the vote opens for a period of five (5) days.

However, in the case of a merger, consolidation, or dissolution the ballots must be delivered and voting must remain open for at least twenty (20) days prior to the meeting at which the vote is scheduled to take place.

vi. After the vote has been open for the requisite number of days, on Tuesday at 8pm, a Board member will announce a thirty (30) minute warning of the conclusion of the vote. On that Tuesday, if a member meeting is not in session, the warning will be given in the current official communication channel.

So, you want to start a class / workshop / event? Great!

BTW: '''You don't need to be a member''', you just need a member to sponsor you and your event. Which shouldn't be too hard.

== Initial Steps ==
* First, gauge interest in your class, you probably want to make sure at least three to four people intend to show up.
* Decide what you want and don't want to teach. Set a scope that makes sense to you.
* Come up with a good name.
