This is a temporary page to gather all of the old links for systems/netwoking documentation into one place.

It will also act as a catch all for proposals for aspects of the network

===What Needs to be done===

*Add pages detailing services on all machines
*Add a detailed topology map
*Document the second switch
*Add pages for firmware management
*Add a combined reporting tool that aggregates network baseline along with status for over night scripts (like backups) and also pulls in
feeds like this

https://nvd.nist.gov/download/nvd-rss.xml

*Technically competent user tutorial: Many PS1 members have some level of computer systems competency but not much in the way of experience. Over the course of this year one of the things that the networking committee (and interested members) should provide is a single document that details all of PS1's digital infrastructure, providing a streamlined narrative structure that will give users a high level over view of what it takes for PS1 to work. It will provide facts and also basic tutorials for some of our services, specifically editing the wiki, filing a ticket with RT, how to log on to all of the machines and which machines there are, how to get an ssh key added.
It will have the network topology, lists of the hardware and their identifiers on the net and more information as is necessary.

This can all be combined into a PDF that can be sent to new users or printed out and given to them if so desired. It should be short, but long enough to cover everything networking related to PS1. In the end it should be a full on "manual" as in, RTFM, manual. This is a medium term goal and should wait until all of the physical network is re-routed and organized, the software is also organized and a CI deployment pipeline setup(ie Ansible + jenkins + git + jenkins or whatever). Care should be taken to produce a manual that is actually usable, ie, with TOC, index, graphics, and editing. This will also allow non-technical users to contribute to a process that they might have otherwise not been able to participate in and will in the end produce an asset for the space that could significantly affect the ease with which new hackers here can get up to speed. A target of less than 60 pages should be initially sought. While this sounds like a great deal of work, much of it will be simply moving documentation from the wiki to a single document, a process which itself can be eventually automated, thus allowing the wiki to continue to serve as the fundamental documentation source.
Each of these services also should have some general monitoring setup, that goes to a place anyone with necessary admin privileges can log in and check on the general health of ps1 digital infrastructure.
At present (1/16/2016) it is currently unclear how much is being backed up and to where such backups are being stored. A previous attempt at setting up a system to handle backups has fallen by the wayside after much effort. It would be wise to get a simple backup script running that pulls down nightly backups to one of the hacktops (for the time being) using something as simple as rsync. This can be as easy as backing up configuration files and databases, or full system backups meant to be usable for restoration.

At the moment this command, wrapped in a script, fed an exclude file, is performing one off backups of key VMs

rsync -azP --exclude-from '/home/ps1user/Backups/exclude-list.txt' root@bob.ad.pumpingstationone.org:/ /home/ps1user/Backup/bob.ad.pumpingstationone.org/

As the membership continues to grow and add users both who are technical competent but not necessarily knowledgable about the various software systems at PS1 it will be useful to have a process that acts as a funnel for new members to add ssh (and perhaps, where necessary gpg keys) to key infrastructure systems, such as the vms presently running much of our software services.

This process could be as easy as a set time that overlaps with one of the groups that meet in the space, such as Python Office hours or Electronics office hours. It could also be set so that someone will be at board or member meetings.

It would be nice if this process was routed through one of the hacktops, allowing anyone who is authorized to merely be at the space, they wouldn't need to have a laptop or phone with them

==General Wiki guidelines and etiquette will go here==
===finding candidates for deletion===
Candidates for deletion are pages that haven't been updated in a long time, are incomplete, abandoned. A question you may ask yourself: is the deletion improving clarity or wiki structure?
* Some equipment pages may be candidates for deletion, but if there is valuable information in them consider making them historical pages.
* If there is some information that would be useful or historical in a page consider moving that content to a more appropriate page or making the page historical.
* Do not delete pages in user namespaces.

===linking orphans===
===add redirects===
* create redirects to single tool pages based on terms you would search to find that tool.
** If there is more than one tool redirect to a disambiguation page or a subsection that lists all those tools.
To add a redirect to an existing page (not another redirect) create a new page and add the following text
*<nowiki>#REDIRECT [[the page you'd like to redirect to]]</nowiki>

===change incorrect redirects===
* all redirects should go to a specific page. If a redirect is relevant to another page or equipment make sure that is redirects there.

===deleting redirects===
*do no delete redirects in user namespaces
*don't delete redirects unless the following are all true:
**the redirect goes to another redirect or creates a loop or leads to a page or redirect that doesn't exist
**and there are no pages linking to that redirect

===locking pages===
===undeleting pages===
===commenting edits===
* when edits are made you should can use the signature button (second button to the right in the edit)--[[User:Rtystgeeke|Rtystgeeke]] ([[User talk:Rtystgeeke|talk]]) 16:54, 19 November 2016 (CST)
* you can also type <nowiki>~~~~</nowiki> characters together to insert a timestamped signature when typing [[User:Skm|Skm]] ([[User talk:Skm|talk]]) 14:40, 3 December 2016 (CST)

===creating your own user page===
*Log into the wiki
*Typing wiki.pumpingstationone.org/user:your_user_name into your browser
*Click the create button in the upper right corner
*Edit your page with your info, tools you know, things you want to learn, and any applicable categories
*Users who are interested in wiki maintenance can edit their user page and add this text to their User page: <nowiki>[[Category:WikiGnomes]]</nowiki>
*If you want to be fancy you can create a redirect by making a new page (with your name or nickname) as the page title and then type REDIRECT#[[User:(your user name)]]

==Links to important pages==

* [[Special:SpecialPages]]
* [[User:Wikibot]] and [https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Wikibot Wikibot manual]
*candidates for deletion
*orphans: [[Special:LonelyPages]] - read this wiki [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Orphan#What_if_I_can.27t_de-orphan_it.3F article] about how to de-orphan. Do not de-orphan just for its own sake.

==Tasks to do==
*develop strategy for determining orphan pages, and linking them. Lots of pages are categorized but not linked (any way to differentiate?)
*Talk to Dave about including categories and special pages bar, or coming up with a better search in general
*de-duplicating information
*who can edit the wiki infrastructure? Toba, Hef, Daniel P, Doorman Dave
*who wants to get access to edit the infrastructure? Ron O
*remove pages for deletion
*orphaned pages should exclude pages that are linked via categories
*figure out if [[Special:Wantedcategories]] that do not have category: pages should be removed from the linking pages or created
*fix [[:Category:EquipmentPageErrorNoAreahost]] so that all equipment belongs to an area host or member
*add [[:Category:Retired_Equipment]] Equipment to equipment that has wiki pages but is deprecated for some reason
**I'd like to create a new template very similar to the candidates marked for deletion that has a reason or link to a new machine
*add [[:Template:NeedsUpdate]] to pages with old, incorrect, or missing information
*roll duplicated information into less pages

==Ideas for improvement==
*email digest to google groups/area host a list of broken tools automatically based on broken tool list
*correlate member pages to list of current members, tag their user page as such

This laptop is (as of Dec 6, 2016) in the process of being setup as a development laptop for infrastructure needs of the space. It will have a full and (hopefully) working build enviornment for working on ps1auth, the rfid code, the wiki and as time goes on any other unix-friendly software that the space depends on.

In time it should also be setup so as to be able to complelely redeploy any necessary networking configuration for the routers, the server rack, etc. It should *not* however function as a place to simply dump user data for the space, and to that end a policy governing that should be written up and submitted to the board and membership as a whole.

==Current Setup (Dec 8, 2016)==

At the moment the hacktop is running Debian 8, jessie. Given that large amounts of the spaces digital infrastructure is written in python, it is loaded up with python libraries for talking to all parts of the space.
