Problem: We require all members to sign a liability waiver. In
Illinois, this waiver is ineffective as to minors because they are not
able to waive their rights in the same way legal adults can, and their
parents/guardians cannot waive those rights for them either. Although
requiring parents and minors to sign a document indicating that they
are aware of the potential risks at PS:One is useful, along with requiring
parents/guardians to waive their own rights with respect to their
child, if a serious injury should befall a minor while at Pumping
Station: One, not only would we feel terrible about it, the resulting
lawsuit could result in the demise of our organization and potentially
could also be directed at its directors, officers, and members
personally. (This is not an assumption about the intention of the
minor or parent, but rather the injured party’s health insurance
company.)

Our lawyers and insurance company recommend that minors in the
workspace be supervised by their parent or legal guardian at all
times.

Solution: Adopt the following policy on minors. Due to the recent
interest in this topic, rather than have lengthy debate the policy
will be voted on in several sections. Proxy voters: for the sections
that will only be voted if certain votes don't pass, please provide a
contingent vote that will be counted if a vote is taken for those
sections.

Policy on Minors

While PS:One maintains a policy of non-discrimination, legal issues
(plus our insurance company) require us to impose age-based
restrictions on those the law considers “minors.” This policy may be
changed by a majority vote of the membership. [This paragraph will be
considered part of the policy if any of the sections to be voted on
pass.]

----Vote #1----

Minors may not be in the space unless they are accompanied and
supervised by their parent or legal guardian at all times.

Parents/guardians may be required to sign a waiver/acknowledgement of
risk relating to their child in addition to the liability waiver that
they are required to sign for themselves.

Violation of this Policy on Minors is grounds for immediate banning
from PS:One, including permanent banning, of both the minor and his or
her parent or guardian.

----Vote #2----- (To be voted on only if Vote #1 passes)

Notwithstanding the above, on a limited basis, the
Board may authorize groups including minors sponsored by
schools or similar organizations, supervised by a sufficient number of
non-parent/guardian chaperones supplied by the sponsoring
organization, to be in the space, if the Board determines that allowing such an event is
important to the mission of PS:One and can be accomplished without
undue disruption to PS:One operations or undue exposure to liability.

Notwithstanding member rights to 24/7 access to the workspace, the
Board may set hours, such as overnight, in which minors, or minors
below a certain age, are not permitted in the workspace at all.

The Board may designate minimum age requirements for member access to certain areas of
the workspace or activities in the workspace. (E.g. No one under 21 in the brewing area.)

----Vote #3----

The Bylaws, under "Eligibility for membership at any tier" are amended
to read:
"In order to be a member of Pumping Station: One, a person must
support the purpose and specific goals of the organization and be
at least 18 years old." [Addition indicated by underscore.]

[If #3 does not pass, further discussion will take place and a future vote scheduled as to the specific nature of underage membership.]

==Blade Brake==
This saw is equipped with a safety feature that will (hopefully) stop the blade when it contacts something conductive-- like your hand. However, that means you normally can't cut conductive things with this saw or you will trigger the safety brake. This is good if it was your hand in the way, but it also destroys the sawblade and requires installation of a replacement part that costs $70+ every time. And the saw will be down until the replacement can be installed.

According to the owner's manual: "Conductive materials such as aluminum and other metals, carbon fiber materials, '''mirrored acrylic''', carbon-filled materials, etc. will typically '''cause the brake to activate'''." [Emphasis added.]

Other things that may trigger the brake include wet wood, and wood with embedded nails or staples. Lexan and green pressure-treated wood reportedly can also be a problem. That is why the rules instruct you to check your material on the side of the blade before spinning it up, and to check your wood for nails or staples!

==Notes==
* There's an m8 hole drilled and tapped in the mitre gauge. The post from a magnetic base of our dial indicators thread in. The post may require a spacer so the threads don't stick out (use a stack of washers or a larger-than-m8 nut).
* The right hand table adjusting screw was bent while aligning the table. The table was aligned without it. Aligning the arbor tilt axis will be *really tough* without a replacement. (Part #11 in the cabinet and table exploded diagram in the manual p98)
* The rear rip fence rail has places to put 4 countersunk allen bolts. The left hand bolt screwed into the main table was too long and made contact with an internal table part (probably the rear trunion). It probably pushed the table out of alignment and caused binding while re-aligning the table. That bolt was left out. Don't replace it!

==Blade Brake==
This saw is equipped with a safety feature that will (hopefully) stop the blade when it contacts something conductive-- like your hand. However, that means you normally can't cut conductive things with this saw or you will trigger the safety brake. This is good if it was your hand in the way, but it also destroys the sawblade and requires installation of a replacement part that costs $70+ every time. And the saw will be down until the replacement can be installed.

According to the owner's manual: "Conductive materials such as aluminum and other metals, carbon fiber materials, '''mirrored acrylic''', carbon-filled materials, etc. will typically '''cause the brake to activate'''." [Emphasis added.]

Other things that may trigger the brake include wet wood, and wood with embedded nails or staples. That is why the rules instruct you to check your material on the side of the blade before spinning it up, and to check your wood for nails or staples!

* There's an m8 hole drilled and tapped in the mitre gauge. The post from a magnetic base of our dial indicators thread in. The post may require a spacer so the threads don't stick out (use a stack of washers or a larger-than-m8 nut).
* The right hand table adjusting screw was bent while aligning the table. The table was aligned without it. Aligning the arbor tilt axis will be *really tough* without a replacement. (Part #11 in the cabinet and table exploded diagram in the manual p98)
* The rear rip fence rail has places to put 4 countersunk allen bolts. The left hand bolt screwed into the main table was too long and made contact with an internal table part (probably the rear trunion). It probably pushed the table out of alignment and caused binding while re-aligning the table. That bolt was left out. Don't replace it!

# Do not move the machine ever.
# Never use the table as a work surface.
# Always have the dust collection on. Turn it on before you plug in the saw and off after you unplug the saw.
# Always check your material on the blade before you spin up the blade. If the light turns red, DO NOT CUT.
# Always check your wood for nails or staples. If you're not sure, check the entire piece with a magnet.
# If you break something, or damage the saw, contact the area host immediately. Don't let others do more damage or hurt themselves by using a broken tool.
# Always dust the entire machine when you are done. Also check the motor compartment after every use and vacuum out as needed.

==Notes==
* There's an m8 hole drilled and tapped in the mitre gauge. The post from a magnetic base of our dial indicators thread in. The post may require a spacer so the threads don't stick out (use a stack of washers or a larger-than-m8 nut).
* The right hand table adjusting screw was bent while aligning the table. The table was aligned without it. Aligning the arbor tilt axis will be *really tough* without a replacement. (Part #11 in the cabinet and table exploded diagram in the manual p98)
* The rear rip fence rail has places to put 4 countersunk allen bolts. The left hand bolt screwed into the main table was too long and made contact with an internal table part (probably the rear trunion). It probably pushed the table out of alignment and caused binding while re-aligning the table. That bolt was left out. Don't replace it!

===Area Rules===

<li>There are equipment such as soldering irons, oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies available for use in the lab. Anyone using equipment or materials in the lab must put things back where they got them from. Since the electronics lab is a share space and maintained by volunteered efforts, we are all asked to contribute in keeping it organized and clean. Tools are located in red bins under the middle counter or smaller bins on and under the left most counter. Everything is labelled for the most part to make it easy to find and put things away.</li>
<li>Components and hardware are provided for use in the Electronics/ Mechatronics Lab. The components and hardware are organized by sections, please refer to the labels on the counter and the bins. The material provided in the space is not meant for someone to build their projects out of entirely. Individuals are expected to bring their own components and hardware. The components provided are available if you are needing parts that you don't have. There is a discretionary donation for use of the PS1 components. $1-$5 for components depending on how much they cost retail. The donation box on far left side. The space does not have a budget to provided materials freely, so if you would like a functional and stocked lab, please donate to keep it going.</li>
<li>If you use any components in the space and you see that the parts are getting low, please write down the parts on the clipboard hanging by the first workbench. Restocking of materials will be done based on this list.</li>
<li>Please don't leave your projects in Electronics/ Mechatronics Lab. Right now we're out of space! If you have a locker, please store your projects there. If not, please take them home with you. If you have on-going long term projects please contact the Area Host about leaving your stuff out.</li>
<li>Respect all the tools - We have expensive, precision equipment. If you break it, no one will be able to use it, and who knows if we'll get another one. If you don't know how to use a tool, ask someone who does, or contact the Area Host!</li>
<li>If something breaks, put a note on it and contact the Area Host, don't just leave it for the next person to find.</li>
<li>Donations of parts, components, hardware, and tools can be made to the Electronics/ Mechatronics Lab, please contact the Area Host before dropping off your stuff at the spaces. Please keep in mind that donations of anything must be use to the lab, not broken and way obsolete parts.</li>
<li>Please throw away your food waste and and garbage on the tables.You are asked to leave the space in better condition than when you came in.</li>

Please refer to the New Events page on how to do this (http://wiki.pumpingstationone.org/New_events). Please make your reservations a least a day in advance. Also If you just want to see what's happening in the Electronics/ Mechatronics Lab you can check the calendar.</li>
<li>Although usage of the space while an event is held is permitted, we want to make sure that everyone is mindful and respectful of the event while it is progress.</li>
<li>Individuals hosting an event must clean and tidy the space after their event.</li>

<li>Projects cannot be left in the shop. (If you absolutely MUST leave it there, please contact the Area Host and make sure it is alright first.)</li>
<li>If a project is left in the shop for more than 7 days, the project will be considered abandoned and be made available to the membership as scrap, or thrown away.</li>

For best results, have all the materials on hand when you start a project and set aside time to finish it quickly so we don't have projects laying all over the shop, half done, for months.

Fire can be caused by:
• overloaded wiring, as in the case of a too-small extension cord overheating from excessive load. If in designing a circuit, you are unsure of the proper wire diameter to use for a given amperage load.

• dirty, loose, or undersized connectors carrying heavy current

• arcing when an electrical supply is partially short circuited

• insulation breakdown from excessive voltage (dielectric puncture)

• component failure due to parts being operated outside of their capabilities

• All of these issues are matters of technique.

• Electric shock can stop your heart if the current path from the hot conductor to the ground conductor crosses your chest.

• If sufficient current flows through body tissue, it will heat very rapidly, causing internal and external burn.

• The powerful stimulation of muscles by shock produces sudden, uncontrolled, and forceful body movements which can cause you to hit yourself, hit someone else, throw any objects which may be in your hand, or fall down and hit your head. It can also cause your grip to latch on the wire which is delivering the shock. This means you can't let go of the wire. If someone is unfortunate enough to get into this situation, either a bystander will have to shut of the power or try to use a non-metallic object (like a broom handle) to knock the person's hand off the wire. The strength and speed of the muscle action is almost superhuman. It is also uniquely painful.

• Always cover your 110 Volt power connections. Use wire-nuts or electrical tape, not masking tape or Scotch™ tape.

• Disconnect the power before opening an electrical chassis

• When working on circuits operating above 50 volts, keep one hand in your pocket. This reduces the chance of an accidental electrical pathway being formed across your heart.

• Know where the disconnect or power plug is for your piece.

• Don't use power cords as a “handle” to pick up things.

• Use insulated tools when working with electricity. (Almost all of our tools have insulated handles).

• Don't put your hands into circuitry if you can't see what you're doing (e.g. in the dark).

• Keep water and other liquids out of your work area. Don't try to use electricity in wet locations.

• Don't allow yourself to become grounded (e.g. by touching metal fixtures) while handling potentials above 50 volts.

• Before you power up your circuit for the first time, have your instructor check it.

• Consumer grade 2-conductor extension cords are not to be brought into the lab. Don't overload extension cords. Use good quality 3-prong cords only.
