== Auth/Use Notes ==
These notes are for authorized users and authorizers; you must be authorized on the tool by a person, not this list. Don't expect this list to be complete or authoritative.

* Vertical band saws cut by feeding the material into the blade.
** The cutting tooth speed is set by spinning the speed adjustment handle.
** Selection between high and low gear is only done when the adjustment handle is spun to the slowest possible speed. Don't force the gear selection; wiggle it into place.
** Only adjust the speed when the machine is on.
** The speed read out is on the dial on the top left part of the machine.
** ''Always'' check the speed versus your material via the read out before making any cuts. Incorrect speeds will quickly ruin blades.
* The cutting feed is set by you, pushing the material into the blade.
** There is a half-circle with steps for workholding and handles to control the piece. Use it whenever possible.
** If cutting curves, check the width of the blade against the chart for the tightest corner you can cut.
** If you're attempting to cut an angle, start by feeding the workpiece directly into the saw to form a notch first.
** The angle of the table can be changed after loosening the knob on the right side of the machine and below the table. Then tilt the table by hand. You may have to adjust the height of the lower blade guide if you tilt the table far from horizontal.
** If the blade is drifting to one side, it might be dulling.
** Ensure that you have between 3 and 24 teeth engaged with the thickness of the workpiece. Too few and you will knock teeth off; too many and you will fail to form a satisfactory chip.
* Power
** The plug is a twist-lock 220V three-phase plug.
** The starter is a grey box on the back of the machine. Press the rocker to display "ON".
** Turn the key to the "on" position.
** Use the larger side buttons to start the machine. The on button may require multiple presses.
** Always hit the red stop button when you're not actively cutting.
** Set the starter to off and unplug the machine when you're finished.
* Safety
** Never put your fingers near the blade. If your part is too small to keep your fingers at least an inch away from the blade and can't be held in the half-circle workholder, design a way to safely hold the workpiece that doesn't put your fingers near the blade.
** Lower the blade guard as much as possible; there should be a narrow gap above the workpiece and no more.
** No gloves or loose sleeves when using the machine; they can be sucked into the blade and drag your arm with. Pushing your sleeves past your shoulder is not acceptable.
** When pushing work, rest your arms on the table and push with your hands. Pushing with your shoulders can cause you to fall into the machine if the blade breaks or the part slips.
** Stand with one foot in front of the other to prevent bashing your head or chest into the machine if you do lose control with your arms.
* Clean up when you're done. Remove your stock and brush all chips into a trash can. Wipe up all cutting fluids.

== Blades ==
Installed:

== Welder ==

The welder is finally functioning. It can be used for blades for any of the bandsaws. So far, we have just welded carbon blades. Bimetal may be difficult- brazing might be a better choice for these. Talk to Ed Bennett or Everett Wilson if you want to learn how to use the welder. The procedure is:
#Measure 120" (5 table lengths) of the bulk blade of your choice.
#Cut the blade to length using the shear above the welder.
#Match the cut ends together with the teeth on each end pointing in opposite directions (180 degree twist in the blade). Grind the ends of the blade until they match and are smooth. Normally you could use the grinder on the welder, but the grinder is not working.
#Clamp the blade in the jaws with the ends of the blade touching.
#Push the welder lever down and hold it down. After the weld is done, release one of the jaw clamps, then release the welder lever.
#Anneal the blade until dull red (pulse width modulate the anneal button - it doesn't take much).
#Grind the weld until smooth and the weld thickness is the same as the blade.

== To-Do ==

Blade welder is missing the grinder motor. The shear for the welder is not making clean cuts.

Add a miter jig which mounts to the right side of the table. A round linear bearing would allow the jig to be tilted down out of the way when not in use.

|The manual for model 16-2 (our saw) says to use SAE 10 motor oil. The manual for the 1612 (a slightly newer model) says SAE 20. DoAll support says use SAE 20 motor oil, which is difficult to find. ISO 68 waylube is equivalent to SAE 20 and available from Zengers in Melrose Park.
| The drain plug is at the bottom of the gear box. Remove pipe cap and fill to the top of the pipe. Takes about 1 quart.
| Changed 10/7/14 with ISO 68. Only about 2 cups of oil were drained, but no sign of a leak.

Oct. 15, 2014 Replaced thrust bearings and bearing caps for the 1/16-1/2" upper and lower guides. With the blade centered on the wheel, there is a gap of about 1/8 between the cap and the back edge of the blade. With medium heavy hand feed, the blade doesn't touch the cap and cause the bearing to turn. This may be OK, as there would be significantly more pressure from the workpiece when using the machine's mechanical feed.

Tried the 5/8-1" guides. appears that there will also be a gap between the blade and thrust bearing cap when using a 3/4" blade with the blade centered on the wheel. For the upper guide, we need 2 longer cap screws (1/4-20?) to hold the 3/4" hardened guides to the guide block and 2 shorter screws (shoulder?) to hold the guide block to the guide post. For the lower guide, 2 cap screws. not sure about the screw that holds the lower guide block in place.
== Status ==

* One phase of the starter is working intermittently. We cleaned the contacts of the starter, but this didn't fix the problem. If the motor is making noise and not turning, turn the starter on the back of the saw 'off' and then 'on. If the problem persists, leave the saw off. We should replace the starter.

* The large groove (fastest speed) of the motor shaft step pulley is bent. The motor vibrates excessively when the belt is in this groove. Use the other grooves (slower speeds) until the pulley is replaced.

'''This tool requires certification for use.'''

Johnson products are now supported by Dake. http://www.dakecorp.com/ Replacement parts for this saw are generally available.
== Blades ==
General rule of thumb is that if the thinnest part (in the direction of the blade) that you're cutting isn't at least 3 saw teeth thick, it will damage the blade.

== To-Do ==

Grease pivot bar

Add coolant pan and pump.

Add blade brush.

Put FPM from the machine's sticky note on here.
Gearbox oil change. Loosen 2 screws on the left edge of right top cover. Remove top 2 screws on the right side. Loosen bottom 2 screws on the right side cover. Slide top cover towards the center of the saw. Pivot the right cover down. Remove drive belt. Remove gearbox step pulley. Remove 3 bolts holding the gearbox. These are near the ring gear teeth. Remove the gearbox out the top of the saw between the two transverse brackets (long shaft comes out last). Drain/fill bolt is on the side opposite the pinion gear. Consider replacing the gaskets on the gearbox.
== Auth/Use Notes ==
These notes are for authorized users and authorizers; you must be authorized on the tool by a person, not this list. Don't expect this list to be complete or authoritative.

* Horizontal band saws cut via a vertically descending blades.
* The cutting tooth speed is set by a pulley in the rear.
** Lift up on the motor to get some slack on the belt.
** Don't cross wheels; keep the pulley belt straight.
** Go toward larger motor wheels for soft metals and plastic and smaller motor wheels for tough metals like steel (and tool steel.)
* The cutting tooth feed is set by a needle valve and a weight on top.
** Be gentle with the needle valve; a single finger with light pressure is enough to adjust it.
* Power
** The plug is a twist-lock 220V three-phase plug.
** The starter is located on the back. If you turn on the machine and it makes a buzzing noise, turn it off immediately and turn off/on the starter.
** During use, the on/off switch at the end of the machine is used for power. The trip lever also activates this same switch.
** Turn off switches and unplug the machine when you're done to prevent accidental activation.
** Never walk away from the machine while it's running. We are not a production shop; babysit the machine in case it fails and avoid putting curious people in danger.
* Clamping a workpiece
** Short pieces cock the vice jaws. This ruins the grip on the workpiece and is to be avoided.
** Use a similarly wide piece on the other side of the vice jaw to prevent the jaw from cocking.
** Check the width of your workpiece against the teeth.
*** The thinnest section of the workpiece should be wider than three teeth in a row.
*** The thickest section of the workpiece should be narrow than twenty-four teeth.
** If you're cutting angle stock, rotate it so that it forms a < shape to prevent it from rotating.
** If you're cutting round, use angle blocks (in the tooling cabinet) to keep it from rotating.
** Check that the movable blade guide is as close as possible while clearing the vice and the table.
* Safety
** Unplug the machine before adjusting the pulley or changing the blade.
** Never leave the machine while running. We aren't a production shop; you need to be right by the machine in case something goes wrong or if a curious person walks by.
* Clean up when you're done. Don't leave stock in the machine; don't leave chips and coolant behind. Use a small bucket to catch chips before they hit the ground.
== Certification ==

==== Description ====
Description:
Angle Grinders are powerful electric motors mounted to a 90deg gearbox. This allows the working tool to be easily manipulated and applied to the work. They typically have a 5/8" arbor, on which you mount cutoff wheels, small grinding wheels, wire wheels, sanding disks, and various other spinny type things.
== Safe Operation ==
To avoid accidents, the following operational safety rules must be observed by everyone working on the Pumping Station: One (PS:One) angle grinder. Failure to follow the safety rules may result in a loss of shop privileges.

=== Start With A Risk Assessment To Ensure A Safe Work Area: ===
1. Angle grinders typically throw sparks when cutting metal. Make sure that there's nothing flammable in the direction sparks will fly. This includes your clothing.
2. Make sure your work is properly secured. The workpiece should be in a vice, or heavy enough that it won't move without your intending for it to move. The angle grinder has approximately 2/3 of a horsepower coming from it, so it can, and will, make things move.

=== Instructions and rules for using the grinder: ===
1. Keep both hands on the grinder. It has two handles for a reason.
2. Do not remove the safety guard. It can be rotated, but it should not be removed unless a buffing pad is being used.
3. Do not set the grinder down with the wheel down. If it accidentally gets turned on, it will run away, or worse, run towards you.
4. Wait until the wheel has stopped spinning before you set the grinder down.
=== Maintnance and replacement of parts ===
Always return the grinder to it's box.
Spare parts and wheels are stored in the box with the grinder.

Replacing a wheel on the grinder:
1. unplug the grinder
2. depress the spindle locking button on the grey section of the grinder
3. use spanner wrench to loosen the retaining nut
4. remove and replace accessory disk. (some disks don't use the nut, such as wire wheels.)
== Certification ==
==== Safe Operation ====
Description:
A bench grinder is a machine used to drive an abrasive wheel or wheels. Depending on the grade of the grinding wheel, it may be used for sharpening cutting tools or shaping metal. To avoid accidents, the following operational safety rules must be observed by everyone working on the Pumping Station: One (PS:One) bench grinder. Failure to follow the safety rules may result in a loss of shop privileges.

A Special Note About Fire Safety:
A bench grind produces a shower of sparks when grinding metal. Know where your nearest fire extinguisher is located before you start grinding. Prior to starting grinding operations inspect the immediate area for, and remove, all flammable materials. Re-inspect the area 30 minutes after the last sparks are generated to ensure that no fires are smoldering.

Start With A Risk Assessment To Ensure A Safe Work Area:
1. A two-foot perimeter around the grinder should be kept clear of people, debris that impair traction or footing to avoid slips and falls.
2. 2. ANSI Z87.1 rated safety glasses with side shields or a face shield must be worn. Hearing protection should be worn but is optional for the band saw module itself unless there is other excessive noise in the shop..
3. Remove loose fitting clothing, jewelry, and tie back long hair.
4. Give the work your undivided attention.

Bench Grinder Safety Rules:
1. Before working with a bench grinder, make sure the tool and its accessories are in the proper working order.
2. If you are mounting new wheels or changing existing wheels perform a “Ring Test”. Suspend the wheel on a pencil held horizontally through the center of the hole. Tap the wheel lightly with a plastic screwdriver handle, in spots 45 degrees from vertical. If it produces a clear ringing tone it is in good condition. If it sounds dull, replace it. NOTE: The ring test will not work on wheels already mounted on the bench grinder.
3. Inspect the wheels for hairline cracks, excessive wear or broken edges before using. EVEN IF YOU ARE ONLY USING ONE WHEEL YOU NEED TO INSPECT BOTH WHEELS PRIOR TO POWERING UP! DO NOT USE THE GRINDER IF EITHER WHEEL IS IN POOR CONDITION OR DAMAGED!
4. Make sure the wheel housing guards are in place.
5. New grinding wheels should be balanced by dressing and truing to eliminate vibration.
6. Used wheels should be trued and dressed when worn out of round, or the surface face is clogged or worn smooth. This provides a clean sharp grinding surface and rebalancing of the wheel. Dress the wheel on the face only. Dressing the side of the wheel would cause it to become too thin for safe use.
7. Don’t operate a grinder unless it is securely mounted to the workbench.
8. Do not grind on the side of the wheel.
9. Do not grind soft materials such as wood, rubber or non-ferrous metals such as copper or aluminum. Soft material can clog up the face of the wheels. Dust from soft materials may also accumulate inside the wheel housings and be a potential fire source.

Operational Safety Rules:
1. Approach your work in the PS:One Shop & on the bench grinder with a safe attitude!
2. Adjustments need to be made when the grinder is unplugged & stopped. Adjust tool rests 1/8” from the wheels and slightly below center line of the wheels and spark or shatter guards (at the top of the wheel housing guards) 1/2” away from the wheels. Re-adjust these as the wheels wear down to a smaller diameter.
3. Stand to one side of the wheel when turning on power. Allow the grinding wheel to run at full operating speed for one minute before standing in front of the grinder. DO NOT use a wheel that vibrates. Use your hearing to listen for unusual sounds and put your hand on the bench to feel for excessive vibration.
4. Bring the object into contact with the grinding wheel slowly and smoothly avoiding impact or bumping motions.
5. Move the object being ground, back and forth across the face of the wheel only, as this prevents "ruts" or grooves from forming.
6. Never grind small stock. Do not attempt to grind or sharpen anything that cannot be adequately supported by the tool rest. Use clamping pliers when grinding parts that cannot be held easily by hand.
7. Do not touch the ground portion of the workpiece until it has cooled.
8. Keep bystanders a safe distance away from the work area. Anyone entering the work area must wear his/her PPE.
9. Turn off grinder and wait until it coasts to a complete stop. Never stick an object into the wheel to stop the grinder quicker. Let it stop on it’s own.
== Auth/Use Notes ==

These notes are for reference after authorization by a person.

Only use drills and accessories with correct shank taper and tang

Work piece needs secure mounting due to spindle's high torque

No through hole (table designed for coolant), must use vise

No quill stop, must set table or head height to prevent drilling into table

Don't force gear selectors, hand turn spindle as needed to align gears

Gears reverse spindle, must turn power switch to appropriate side for correct spindle rotation direction

Power switch has two speeds to each side

Drill shanks must be firmly seated in taper

To remove drill, lower spindle to expose the slot in the quill, turn the spindle by hand until the quill slot lines up with the spindle slot, insert the #3 drift into the slot with the curved edge facing up, grasp drill, tap drift with hammer

== To-Do ==
== Status ==

General rule of thumb is that if the thinnest part (in the direction of the blade) that you're cutting isn't at least 3 saw teeth thick, it will damage the blade.

== Status ==

== Blades ==
General rule of thumb is that if the thinnest part (in the direction of the blade) that you're cutting isn't at least 3 saw teeth thick, it will damage the blade.

== To-Do ==

Grease pivot bar

Add coolant pan and pump.

Add blade brush.

Put FPM from the machine's sticky note on here.
