== Description ==
This is an oddball lathe that seems to be assembled from a collection of parts from other lathes.
*The bed and legs are from a No:1642 16" electronic variable speed lathe.
**There was a dataplate on the legs to this effect, but ALL the information on it was wrong (swing, working length, speed control type, etc.) for our lathe configuration, so it was removed
*The headstock and tailstock are (we think) from a 1442 MECHANICAL variable speed lathe
** manual here: [[file:Jet_1442_lathe.pdf]]
*The tool rest is fairly large for the headstock height and ~probably~ originated with the 16" lathe parts

== Status ==

It spins. Don't change the speed- the speed-change mechanism is broken and also jammed in place.
== Personal Protective Equipment ==

* Face shield (not just safety glasses) must be worn.
* Long and loose hair must be contained.
* Do not wear gloves or loose clothing.
* Remove watches, rings, and other jewelry.
* Roll up or don't wear long sleeves.
* Dust protection may be required.

== Pre-Operational Safety Checks ==
* Locate and ensure you are familiar with all machine operations and controls.
* Ensure all guards are fitted, secure and functional. Do not operate if guards are missing or faulty.
* Workpiece must be securely fastened to face plate, chuck or between centers.
* Rotate the workpiece by hand to check clearance between tool rest and bed.
* Ensure the cutting tools are sharp and in good condition.
* Start the dust extraction unit before using the machine.
* Make sure all clamping handles are tight.

== Operational Safety Checks ==
* Adjust speed to suit the diameter of the work and turning operation (IMPORTANT - *never* adjust speed while the lathe is off!)
* Before making adjustments (apart from speed), switch off and bring the machine to a complete standstill.
* Keep the tool rest adjusted close to the work and at the correct height.
* Stop the lathe and remove all tool rests before sanding.

== Ending Operations and Cleaning Up ==
* Switch off the machine when work completed.
* Return all chisels and other tools to racks.
* Leave the machine in a safe, clean and tidy state.
* Sweep or vacuum any wood debris/dust/shavings.

== Potential Hazards and Injuries ==
* Please watch this short safety video on YouTube [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yhkeUP6Mf8]
* Eye injuries from flying debris or defective timber. Wear appropriate eye protection.
* Hair/clothing getting caught in moving machine parts. Remove jewelry, loose clothes, keep sleeves short, roll up sleeves, no gloves, secure long hair
* Airborne dust. Wear a respirator or dust mask appropriate for the material you are using.

== Do ==
* Rough cut the workpiece as close as possible to the finished shape before installing it.
* Check your workpiece for flaws, cracks, knots etc. and test glue joints before mounting the workpiece on machine.
* Use the lowest speed when starting a new workpiece.

== Don't ==
* Drive the workpiece into the drive center while the drive center is in the headstock.
* Touch your project by hand while the lathe is running

== DO ==
* Set the drive center into the workpiece with a soft mallet prior to installing it on the headstock.

== How To Get Authorized ==
We try to say "authorized" now at PS:1 instead of "certified" because we aren't saying you're an expert after authorization, just briefed ... There is a list of authorized proctors (trainers) at the top of this page. You can't become authorized from just any other member who knows how to use this too, it's a dangerous piece of equipment and we're keeping the authorization process a little more formal because of that. Ask the area host for the wood shop, any volunteer authorizers for wood shop, or the people listed as authorized proctors about authorization.
== Description ==
A recent model Knee Mill made by the Bridgeport company. This is the gold-standard small shop manual milling machine in the US. Most other mills of the same size are direct copies of the bridgeport design. This particular machine is a Series I, J-head with a mechanical variable speed drive. The machine has a power quill feed built into the head, in addition to the additional equipment listed below. This machine is capable of facing, surfacing, drilling and slotting in materials ranging from plastics to mild steel. Harder metals may be cut if special cutters and coolant are available. This machine is not equipped with CNC controls, consequently curved paths are limited to circular arcs. These can be cut on pieces that can be mounted on the 8" rotary table or approximated to a desired precision using the simple or smooth arc functions of the DRO.
=== Repairs ===
The X-axis handle (opposite the power feed) is missing the spring.

The handle for the Z-axis front lock has snapped off. The rabbit hole is [http://www.icai-online.com/knee-lock-shaft-assembly.html deeper than expected], or may just be a handle that can be removed.

The screw to prevent collets from rotating in the spindle is frequently removed, as some collets won't fit with it in there and it can cause bigger problems if it shears off. This won't be repaired.

The power feed appears to be leaking oil. Parts that we should consider replacing:
* 61 11636413 Seal, Shaft quantity 1
* 72 11630134 Gasket, Cover quantity 1
* 33 11630261 Bearing, Single Row, Loose Fit, quantity 2; these should be available from a bearing distributor
== Use ==
Cover the machine when not in use. Keep the cover off of the floor and allow coolant to evaporate before covering again.

A resonance sets in when the variable frequency drive is set to around 50-65%.

A red dot indicates a setting that can only be changed when the lathe is '''off'''.

== Speeds and feeds ==
For safety and best results, familiarize yourself with the appropriate feeds and speeds for the material you're working on and the operations you intend to do. Several copies of [http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machinery's_Handbook Machinery's Handbook], the authoritative resource, are on the shelf above the Bridgeport knee mill. Even old editions are just fine for most materials and operations.

== Authorization ==
Contact Anna Yu for authorization. Their contact information is on the side of the lathe.

Individuals must bring 1" diameter x 6" 6061 aluminum round for the Clausing authorization. Aluminum stock can be purchased from Mcmaster Carr (www.mcmaster.com) part number 8974K13

This tool requires [[Tier 1 Cold Metals Authorization]]

Due to the complexity of the machine, individuals requesting for authorizations must either have prior metal lathe experience or have a project that would require the use of the machine within two weeks of the given authorization.

List of individuals that can provide additional pointers and assistance once you're authorized:

* Ryan
* Ed
* Tucker
== Auth/Use Notes ==
These notes are for authorized users and authorizers; you must be authorized on the tool by a person, not this list. Don't expect this list to be complete or authoritative.

* Vertical band saws cut by feeding the material into the blade.
** The cutting tooth speed is set by spinning the speed adjustment handle.
** Selection between high and low gear is only done when the adjustment handle is spun to the slowest possible speed. Don't force the gear selection; wiggle it into place.
** Only adjust the speed when the machine is on.
** The speed read out is on the dial on the top left part of the machine.
** ''Always'' check the speed versus your material via the read out before making any cuts. Incorrect speeds will quickly ruin blades.
* The cutting feed is set by you, pushing the material into the blade.
** There is a half-circle with steps for workholding and handles to control the piece. Use it whenever possible.
** If cutting curves, check the width of the blade against the chart for the tightest corner you can cut.
** If you're attempting to cut an angle, start by feeding the workpiece directly into the saw to form a notch first.
** The angle of the table can be changed after loosening the knob on the right side of the machine and below the table. Then tilt the table by hand. You may have to adjust the height of the lower blade guide if you tilt the table far from horizontal.
** If the blade is drifting to one side, it might be dulling.
** Ensure that you have between 3 and 24 teeth engaged with the thickness of the workpiece. Too few and you will knock teeth off; too many and you will fail to form a satisfactory chip.
* Power
** The plug is a twist-lock 220V three-phase plug.
** The starter is a grey box on the back of the machine. Press the rocker to display "ON".
** Turn the key to the "on" position.
** Use the larger side buttons to start the machine. The on button may require multiple presses.
** Always hit the red stop button when you're not actively cutting.
** Set the starter to off and unplug the machine when you're finished.
* Safety
** Never put your fingers near the blade. If your part is too small to keep your fingers at least an inch away from the blade and can't be held in the half-circle workholder, design a way to safely hold the workpiece that doesn't put your fingers near the blade.
** Lower the blade guard as much as possible; there should be a narrow gap above the workpiece and no more.
** No gloves or loose sleeves when using the machine; they can be sucked into the blade and drag your arm with. Pushing your sleeves past your shoulder is not acceptable.
** When pushing work, rest your arms on the table and push with your hands. Pushing with your shoulders can cause you to fall into the machine if the blade breaks or the part slips.
** Stand with one foot in front of the other to prevent bashing your head or chest into the machine if you do lose control with your arms.
* Clean up when you're done. Remove your stock and brush all chips into a trash can. Wipe up all cutting fluids.

== Blades ==
Installed:

== Welder ==

The welder is finally functioning. It can be used for blades for any of the bandsaws. So far, we have just welded carbon blades. Bimetal may be difficult- brazing might be a better choice for these. Talk to Ed Bennett or Everett Wilson if you want to learn how to use the welder. The procedure is:
#Measure 120" (5 table lengths) of the bulk blade of your choice.
#Cut the blade to length using the shear above the welder.
#Match the cut ends together with the teeth on each end pointing in opposite directions (180 degree twist in the blade). Grind the ends of the blade until they match and are smooth. Normally you could use the grinder on the welder, but the grinder is not working.
#Clamp the blade in the jaws with the ends of the blade touching.
#Push the welder lever down and hold it down. After the weld is done, release one of the jaw clamps, then release the welder lever.
#Anneal the blade until dull red (pulse width modulate the anneal button - it doesn't take much).
#Grind the weld until smooth and the weld thickness is the same as the blade.

== To-Do ==

Blade welder is missing the grinder motor. The shear for the welder is not making clean cuts.

Add a miter jig which mounts to the right side of the table. A round linear bearing would allow the jig to be tilted down out of the way when not in use.
|The manual for model 16-2 (our saw) says to use SAE 10 motor oil. The manual for the 1612 (a slightly newer model) says SAE 20. DoAll support says use SAE 20 motor oil, which is difficult to find. ISO 68 waylube is equivalent to SAE 20 and available from Zengers in Melrose Park.
| The drain plug is at the bottom of the gear box. Remove pipe cap and fill to the top of the pipe. Takes about 1 quart.
| Changed 10/7/14 with ISO 68. Only about 2 cups of oil were drained, but no sign of a leak.

Oct. 15, 2014 Replaced thrust bearings and bearing caps for the 1/16-1/2" upper and lower guides. With the blade centered on the wheel, there is a gap of about 1/8 between the cap and the back edge of the blade. With medium heavy hand feed, the blade doesn't touch the cap and cause the bearing to turn. This may be OK, as there would be significantly more pressure from the workpiece when using the machine's mechanical feed.

Tried the 5/8-1" guides. appears that there will also be a gap between the blade and thrust bearing cap when using a 3/4" blade with the blade centered on the wheel. For the upper guide, we need 2 longer cap screws (1/4-20?) to hold the 3/4" hardened guides to the guide block and 2 shorter screws (shoulder?) to hold the guide block to the guide post. For the lower guide, 2 cap screws. not sure about the screw that holds the lower guide block in place.
== Auth/Use Notes ==

* Power
* Safety

== Blades ==
Installed:

== Welder ==

== To-Do ==

== Status ==
* A VFD has been fitted, this allows the machine to run on a 110v circuit and provides a variable speed control. The display shows the RPM of the drive wheel (16") * 4 which is approximately blade speed in FPM. The power switch on the left side of the control box applies power to the VFD. The on/off button on the front panel and the limit switch control the blade, the button must be out for on and the limit switch up to run. The button switch serves as an emergency switch, pull for on push for off. The dial controls RPM.
- Jim Brink 12/10/16

* The large groove (fastest speed) of the motor shaft step pulley is bent. The motor vibrates excessively when the belt is in this groove. Use the other grooves (slower speeds) until the pulley is replaced.
== Blades ==
General rule of thumb is that if the thinnest part (in the direction of the blade) that you're cutting isn't at least 3 saw teeth thick, it will damage the blade.

== To-Do ==

Grease pivot bar

Add coolant pan and pump.

Add blade brush.

Post a chart of recommended blade speeds for various materials.
== Auth/Use Notes ==
These notes are for authorized users and authorizers; you must be authorized on the tool by a person, not this list. Don't expect this list to be complete or authoritative.

* Horizontal band saws cut via a vertically descending blades.
* The cutting tooth speed is set by a pulley in the rear and VFD.
** Lift up on the motor to get some slack on the belt.
** Don't cross wheels; keep the pulley belt straight.
** Go toward larger motor wheels for soft metals and plastic and smaller motor wheels for tough metals like steel (and tool steel.)
* The cutting tooth feed is set by a needle valve and a weight on top.
** Be gentle with the needle valve; a single finger with light pressure is enough to adjust it.
* Power
** as of 12/16 a Fluxmaster 50 VFD has been added, for more information on the Fluxmaster see the link in resources. The machine is now powered by 120v. Any 120 volt outlet can be used.
** Power to the VFD is controlled by the toggle switch on the left of the control box.
** The button switch on the front and and the trip lever control the motor. The button must be pulled out and the trip lever up. Both must be 'on' to power the motor.
** RPM is controlled by the dial and the belt position.
** The large display shows approximate blade speed in feet per minute. The smaller display on the VFD shows the output frequency of the VFD and is not needed for operation.
** Turn off switches and unplug the machine when you're done to prevent accidental activation.
** Never walk away from the machine while it's running. We are not a production shop; babysit the machine in case it fails and avoid putting curious people in danger.
* Clamping a workpiece
** Short pieces cock the vice jaws. This ruins the grip on the workpiece and is to be avoided. Componensate by using a block approximately the size of your workpiece or a machinist jack on the far side of the vise jaws.
** Check the width of your workpiece against the teeth.
*** The thinnest section of the workpiece should be wider than three teeth in a row.
*** The thickest section of the workpiece should be narrow than twenty-four teeth.
** If you're cutting angle stock, rotate it so that it forms a < shape to prevent it from rotating.
** If you're cutting round, use angle blocks (in the tooling cabinet) to keep it from rotating.
** Check that the movable blade guide is as close as possible while clearing the vice and the table.
* Safety
** Unplug the machine before adjusting the pulley or changing the blade.
** Never leave the machine while running. We aren't a production shop; you need to be right by the machine in case something goes wrong or if a curious person walks by.
* Clean up when you're done. Don't leave stock in the machine; don't leave chips and coolant behind. Use a small bucket to catch chips before they hit the ground.

Weight: 400 pounds

== Auth/Use Notes ==

These notes are for reference after authorization by a person.

The spindle switch must be 'off' and the e-stop (big red button) must be in the out position (twist the button counter clockwise) before the spindle can be turned on.

Authorizations from the old DoAll drill press carry over to this machine.

The motor direction is reversible using a switch on the back of the control box. For nearly all drills, the spindle must rotate clockwise when viewed from above.

Operation:
# Setup material securely on the table. Be sure the drill will not drill into the table.
# Turn e-stop counter clockwise
# Turn on power switch on the back of the control box
# Set the RPM based on the material being drilled and the drill diameter.
# Set the direction switch on the back of the control box to 'forward'.
# Move the spindle switch to 'on' when you are ready to drill.
# To turn off, push the e-stop or move the spindle switch to the 'off' position.

== To-Do ==
A drill mounted in the chuck will have some run out. For most applications this should be acceptable. The cause could be a bent spindle or worn chuck.

We should to have a chart nearby showing recommended spindle speeds for various drill sizes and materials.

== Maintenance ==

== Equipment ==

Drills and vises are stored in the cabinet in front of the drill press.
