Description
The 4th and 5th iteration of Formlab's SLA printers. Released for use by artists, designers, and professional 3D printers. The Form 3 offers a larger print area than the Form 2 and an improved optics engine.

Consumables and Materials
Who provides resin and trays?
You may purchase your own resin and tray, or join a co-op to share materials with a small group: https://wiki.pumpingstationone.org/Formlabs_Form_3_SLA_Printer_Co-Ops

Prerequisites to Authorization
The only prerequisite for Form 3 authorization is to be authorized on the "regular" 3D printers. Must be able to create a print on one of the currently operational filament printers. Formlabs authorization is about one 3-hour session.

Authorization - How to Sign Up for Training
Google form (application) will be available soon.
Description
A nice 3D printer that has been upgraded and is now listed as a Prusa i3 MK2S A 3D Printer https://wiki.pumpingstationone.org/Prusa_i3_MK2S_A_3D_Printer

Status
1/1/2018 - This machine has been upgraded and is now listed as a different machine, one of the Prusa i3 Mk2S 3D printers. Which one is it? I don't know and it doesn't seem to matter much.

4/24/2017 - Printer bed connector is failing, could be failing print bed causing excess current draw; install solid state relay and if problem persist replace with silicone heater bed. Uneven extrusion or slippage, possible problem with the hobbed bolt; brass and is going bad; Should be replaced with stainless steel one. (ajasani)

11/27/16 - Tested printer with random yellow PLA, resulting in poor print quality. Suspect that PLA may be bad, as it snaps instead of bending. Going to test with different PLA. --Skynaya (talk) 11:36, 28 November 2016 (CST)

3/14/2017 - Cura intermittently detects the printer. Use the Simplify3D profile below for the Prusa using Com 7.

Authorization
Ask CNC Area Host. Email: 3dprinters@pumpingstationone.org or look on the shelf holding the 3D printers for the sign with the name and contact information for the 3D printer area host. No regularly scheduled authorizations. Authorization sessions can be arranged for 3 or more members as required. If you want to schedule an authorization session, find 2 or more other people and email the CNC Area Host for referral to an authorizer.

Operation
Prusa i3 OctoPrint Server
The Prusa i3 now uses OctoPrint as its host device. You can now send jobs to the printer via any computer in the space, even your personal device.

The OctoPrint server for the Prusa i3 can be reached at http://10.100.1.200/

* When connecting to the OctoPrint server, you may first need to select "Connect" under the left side Connection tab if the printer has been turned off.
** All settings to connect are retained and should not be modified.
* Once the printer is connected, you can begin warming it up with the Temperature tab.
** Enter a temperature in Celsius and click "Set"
* You can control the printer's movements and extrusion using the "Control" tab.

* To get started printing, upload an STL using the left side "Files" tab.
* Find the STL you uploaded and click the "Slice" button, it looks like a magic wand.
* From here, you can select what slicer engine you'd like to use and what settings you'd like to print with.
** Cura is the default slicing engine.
** Select one of the preset slicing profiles, and then manually set your preferred temperatures and speeds using the Basic and Advanced tabs.
* Now locate the newly generated GCO file (G-Code) in the left side Files tab. You can now click "Load and Print" to print your object.
* It is preferred if you delete your files from the OctoPrint server when you are done. You can download your GCO file for future printing if you would like to retain the specific sliced project.

This is only a high level overview of how to use OctoPrint. If you are already authorized but have not used OctoPrint, feel free to attend future authorization sessions. OctoPrint will accept g-code from the most popular slicers such as Cura, Slic3r, Repetier-Host, and Simplify3D.

Troubleshooting
Please add information to this section if you discover some useful tips and tricks.

*Use the manual controls to preheat the nozzle and bed for your material type. Then Cura may detect the printer.

Mods
Unknown.

SD Card
Should accept any SD card. Use the Replicator Dual SD card or bring your own.

Usable Print Area
200mm x 200mm x 180mm (Please verify - --Skynaya (talk) 11:36, 28 November 2016 (CST))

Nozzle size
* Presumed 0.35mm nozzle, verification would be appreciated --Skynaya (talk) 11:36, 28 November 2016 (CST)

Host Software
Users of Linux, Windows, OSX will need to install the following software:
* Pronterface - or Repeteir-Host for manual operation of the printer as well as for starting print jobs
* Slic3r - for creating gcode (print jobs) from 3D models
* Alternately, you can use Cura by Ultimaker

Suggested Settings
This printer has not seen much testing, and appropriate settings have yet to be determined.
Ultimaker Cura
Settings that have worked in my experience for Cura:

First load the Prusa profile. It is usually among the default profiles in Cura.

Custom settings for PLA
* Printing temp=215C
* Build plate temp=55C
Speed:
* Print speed= 40mm/s (I haven't tried faster but it is possible)
* Top/bottom speed=20mm/s
* Initial layer speed=20mm/s
* Initial layer travel speed=60mm/s

Rest of settings are the defaults for the Prusa profile.

Ultimaker Cura
Settings that have worked in my experience for Cura:

First load the Prusa profile. It is usually among the default profiles in Cura.

Custom settings for PLA
* Printing temp=215C
* Build plate temp=55C
Speed:
* Print speed= 40mm/s (I haven't tried faster but it is possible)
* Top/bottom speed=20mm/s
* Initial layer speed=20mm/s
* Initial layer travel speed=60mm/s

Rest of settings are the defaults for the Prusa profile.
Status
* 6/27/2019 Universal was repaired by Scientific Spectrum Midwest to full functionality. Need to fix air supply before the Universal is put back into service. See required parts needed See and for maintenance. If you need to get familiar with the universal, please checkout out and
* 5/19/2019 Universal laser is not working. Ask the Area Host at lasers@pumpingstationone.org for more information.
* 04/1/2019 Back Up And running, Check Google Group for more details
* 02/18/2019 Out of Service: Assembly out for repair; no ETA on repairs; check Google Group for more details and updates.
* 12/20/2018 Universal 15OW is running on the top tube only (so, effectively 75W), and even so is cutting weakly.
* (12/2/2017) Hooked up to ex-Epilog air and exhaust connection. The air assist works but does leak using the quick connect fitting, the other fitting requires a 1/2" (I think) screw fitting which will create a better seal. The x-axis is off by ~3/8", y is off too but didn't measure.
Current status: connected to exhaust and compressed air using the ones designed for the Epilog while the Epilog is out of service. Figuring out authorizations. If you want to be part of that, get in touch with CNC Area Host or folks on the Danger Committee.
* (2017/05/20) Wiki page created
* (August 2017) Laser donated from SAIC - thank you, Anna Yu!

Authorization: How to Get Authorized
Authorization for the laser is not viral, meaning you must seek out a Volunteer Authorizer.
There are Volunteer Authorizers that tend to run regularly scheduled authorizations. Check the calendar of events: https://pumpingstationone.org/events/
Contact the laser area host at lasers@pumpingstationone.org if you need to find an authorizer.
If no authorizations are scheduled in the next 30 days, then post on the Google Group email list or contact cnc-auths@pumpingstationone.org; look for a recent thread about laser authorizations and post there.

Danger Committee folks from the other laser systems should consider themselves on the Danger Committee for this bad boy, too. Let's get this thing in regular rotation, stat!
About
The Universal Laser Systems PLS6.150D is a free-standing platform with a materials processing envelope of 32" x 18" x 9" or 5,184 in³ (813 x 457 x 229 mm or 84,950 cm³) that supports dual lasers. As a dual laser platform, the PLS6.150 can support up to two 10.6µ CO2 lasers with a power range of 10 watts to 150 watts. Additionally, it can support a single 9.3µ CO2 of 30, 50 or 75 watts. (if a 9.3u CO2 laser is installed, only one 10.6 CO2 of up to 75 watts may be installed at the same time.)

This one has two 75Wlasers totaling 150W of power.

The unit was donated from SAIC.

Procedures
Maintenance
Universal Maintenance
*
*

Setting Up Your Computer
* Download the Adobe Illustrator CC Template to your profile
TIPS:
* To make your life easier, get used to setting your vector cuts red and raster black.
* White is one of the colors in the template, but acts as a mask unless you tell it otherwise.
* Click "Apply" every time you do anything in the print settings, or it won't save.

Air assist
* Turn on the air assist by flipping the switch dangling from the board behind the laser.
* Air assist is used for vector cutting to have nice traces and avoid your material to burn. However some people like to have it disabled for raster jobs.
* Turn air assist off when you've finished and you don't need it while doing your settings.

Water Trap
* Check the WATER TRAP adjacent to the regulator for accumulated water from time to time. Place a container (and maybe some paper towels) under the regulator and vent accumulated water from the bottom using the small petcock. If too much water accumulates in the regulator, it may flow through the air hose and into the machine, spraying onto the bed/material.

Exhaust
* Turn on the Exhaust Fan by flipping the switch on the gray box to the left of the Boss Laser.

Powering On Machine
* Turn on the Power Switch and let the machine complete the entire boot up cycle, approximately 1-2 minutes.

Running your job
*Use the printer driver and Universal Control Panel (UCP) to send data to the laser.
*The printer driver is discussed from page 39-57 of the manual, and on page 58-62, the UCP is explained.
*https://wiki.pumpingstationone.org/images/Universal_PLS6.150D_user_guide.pdf

Powering Off Machine
* Allow the Exhaust & Air Assist to run for approximately 10-15 after completing a job. (DO NOT CYCLE THE EXHAUST SYSTEM RAPIDLY).
* Turn off the Exhaust & Air Assist FIRST
* Power down the machine
* Clean up you materials, throw away scrap, make sure the focusing tool is replaced

How to become a Authorizer
We want as many people available to do Cold Metals Tier 1 authorizations as we can get. The idea is to promote safety, and get people used to the sounds that a machine tool cutting well makes.

New authorizers get authorized to authorize others by (1) having some amount of presence in the shop and (2) closely following the "script" during EITHER a "dry-run" authorizing session given to an authorized authorizer -- or conducting a real-live authorizing session while being observed by an authorized authorizer. During such a session, the observing authorizer should _not_ have to speak. Obviously if the new authorizer-to-be has *significant* problems in communication of the content of the "script", the observing authorizer will contribute to the discussion. For the new authorizer-to-be it's a test, not an opportunity for team-teaching.

Tool information
Safety
General Personal Safety, and Consideration of Others
You must work safely. Your actions must not threaten the safety of you, of others, or the tools.You should never operate machine tools under the influence of drugs (prescription or otherwise) or alcohol.It is your responsibility to protect your eyes. Safety goggles may be provided in the cage for activities that have the potential to generate flying particles. Activities which may, depending on circumstances generate flying particles include but are not limited to drilling, sawing, lathing, milling, hammering, chiseling, grinding, and belt sanding. Don't use goggles which are dirty or fogged-up. If cleaning is required cleansing pads may be available in the cage. To clean your goggles, all surfaces that have contact with the skin must be wiped down. The lens should be wiped down, both front and inside. If you choose to use purchase your own goggles be sure they are rated for labeled z87 (this should be written or stamped on the side of all goggles) and have side shields.Disposable earplugs may be supplied in the cage. Follow the instructions on the dispenser. They are surprisingly more effective if you do. Many types of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are not effective if used improperly. If you don't know whether or how to use your protective equipment, read the instructions.Because of cost and hygiene problems, PS:1 cannot be depended upon to stock dust masks/respirators. If your work has the potential to generate dusts, mists, or vapors, you may proceed only by following these rules:

# Get your own respiratory protection. Ace Hardware has many types. Make sure the mask or filter is really for the substance confronting you. Do not, for instance, use a paper dust mask for organic paint fumes. Follow the mask manufacturer's instructions.
# Work in the back dock when possible, or with an exhaust fan on.
# If it is necessary to work in the main shop be sure you aren't inflicting your fumes or dust on someone else. It would be excellent if you as the fume generator waits until no one is present who could be harmed or inconvenienced by your activities.

When using power tools, remove gloves, watches, jewelry, and roll up your sleeves. Keep your hair tied back and tucked away. This is especially true for the drill presses, mill, and lathe. Tools with moving parts can injure your hands or catch your hair and pull your head into the machine. Gloves and loose clothing can also get caught in moving machinery. Never put your hand in the vicinity of any moving part of any machine. When adjusting the speed of a belt-driven machine (drill press, lathe, mill or other step-pulley drive) unplug the machine before putting your hands into the drive belts. Every Time.If in using any machine that cuts material, you cannot see a cut in progress because of chips or dust produced by the cutting process, a chip brush to clear the work zone -- never use your hands while the tool is on.PS:1 keeps fire extinguishers and first aid supplies on hand. It would be good to familiarize yourself with their locations before you begin your work.

It is best to not work alone in the shop while using machine tools. If you are hurt and cannot dial 911, another person in the space could do that for you. Use the right tool for the job. Incorrect tool usage produces bad results, and can be detrimental to you, your work, and the tools.Knowing a tool is knowing how it works. For instance, power tools make different sounds when they are working. Some sounds are HAPPY and some sounds are SAD. If you don't know how a tool should work, in spite of the demonstration given with this authorization, ask somebody who does know.

Safe and Proper Use of the Power Tools
This is not an instructional guide to being a machinist. For skill development in using tools in fabrication, you should take a class of some kind and practice, practice, practice. In this authorization, you will be shown only the basic operation of the tools. The purpose of these minimal illustrations of technique is so that you might have some idea of the types of things the tools are capable of. Authorization gives you permission to use the tools. Authorization to use the tools is not a certification of your competence.

Tool use
Horizontal Bandsaw
The horizontal bandsaw is only for cutting metals.

Clamp your work securely in the vise. Be sure that the work cannot rotate or flip around in the vise when the saw is pulling the blade through the cut. Close the blade guides to the minimum distance that will (1) clear the workpiece and (2) not interfere with the movement of the saw at the bottom end of its travel.

Set the force-control weight to apply proper pressure to the cut. In most cases, this is at minimum. (Closer to the motor is less cut force). Open the hydraulic valve to produce a good feed rate. If the blade seems like it's starting to snag the workpiece or clog the teeth, take a lighter cut by decreasing the feed rate. If the saw is not producing a chip, increase the feed rate. Unless there is a reason to be taking a very light cut, the sound of the saw teeth should be consistent during the entire rotation of the blade. Except when taking a very light cut, the sound of the saw teeth contacting the material should be consistent and chips should form at an even rate. Using coolant helps to preserve blade life, and increase the speed and quality of the cut. It also makes a mess.

A major cause of blade breakage is thin workpieces snagging the saw blade teeth. Snagging causes teeth to be broken and can also cause the blade to stall or come off the wheels. Check the blade for missing teeth before using the saw. A blade with missing teeth is usually not fit for use. Using a fine pitch blade on soft materials like aluminum can clog the teeth and cause the blade to grab the work and stall. Be sure the chips are clearing the teeth. If not, use coolant or a wire brush to push the chips from the teeth. Using a coarse blade on steel will cause the teeth to snag on the work and break off. Turning the saw off (stopping the motor) while the saw is in a cut can cause broken teeth. Any problem that can break a tooth can also cause the blade to come off the wheels. Use the right blade for the work. Trying to mediate a cut on the horizontal bandsaw can cause saw blade teeth to be knocked off the blade; set the saw to lower the blade slowly into the work and then let go. Be gentle with the hydraulic valve. It only requires a feather touch to turn it. Over-torquing the valve handle can damage the valve. If your workpiece gets snagged and stuck on the blade, stop the saw immediately. Unplug the saw, then try to pull the workpiece straight down off the blade.

To free the stuck workpiece, use a rocking or wiggling motion, in-line with the axis of the blade. Don't twist the blade. A bend or kink ruins the blade. If you still can't get your workpiece off the blade, don't force it. Tag the saw as “out of order” and post a message to the list saying “The blade on the horizontal bandsaw is stuck. Could someone please un-stick it.” If the blade comes off the wheels, tag the saw and post the problem to the list.

In the cold metals area we have grouped together authorizations on the non-precision cutting tools into a single authorization. The Rockwell drill press, Johnson Bandsaw, and Bandsaw are under the Cold Metals Tier 1 authorization process. The session covers basic operation and safety on the machines.

NOTE: Prior to April 2017, the Bench Grinder (6in), Belt Sander, and Chop Saw were included in this authorization.

Monitor the mailing list for times and dates, or contact one of the listed authorizers.
Cold Metals Tier 1 authorization can currently be done by the following people:
