==Operation==
*Start burnout process for flask
*clamp machine to sturdy table
*place chipboard box over machine (box currently (7/2015) located on top of lockers near back door)
*wind machine counter clockwise for several turns
*while holding wound machine, lift shiny metal bar upward and gently rest the swing arm against it
**Pressure from swing arm will hold shiny bar in place
*retract crucible tray (the metal bit that moves back and forth along the centrifugal arm axis)
*start heating metal in separate crucible in a safe, nearby location. Preferably surrounded by firebrick
*remove flask from burnout oven
*place appropriately sized sheet metal support ring over heated investment flask
**we have one for our wider flasks and one for the narrow flasks. Both are located with the flasks, crucibles, and casting machine
*load flask and support ring onto the swinging arm
*push crucible tray up against back of heated flask until snug
*load crucible with molten metal into crucible tray. Keep under torch as much as possible to prevent oxidation.
**Try not to torch the casting machine
*pull counterweight slightly counterclockwise to release shiny metal bar
*release counterweight and GET YOUR ARM OUT OF THE WAY
*allow spinning arm to come to a complete stop before removing crucible/investment flask
*dunk investment flask into water bucket to disintegrate investment
*admire prize

== To-Do ==

* better mounting for tables
* document the box you put around it to avoid splashy metal
**Current box is kind of crappy, but works fine

==Notes==
*This thing holds a temperature pretty well, once you get it dialed in it stays rock steady
*There is no temperature probe at the moment. There is a hole on the back which angles upward and is ~6-7mm diameter.
*Maximum temperature has not be assessed. The above table has most useful values for casting with Kerr Satin Cast 20 investment in our size flasks.

== To-Do ==

* Make some graphs of how fast it will typically heat up over time given different settings and flasks.
* Get new ceramic drip tray (current one is cracked)
* Put the PS1 equipment label on a hard tag and wire it to the power cord (affixing it to the equipment itself is unfeasible, it gets too hot.
** This would be cool to do with anodized aluminum in the laser --[[User:Dbever|Dbever]] ([[User talk:Dbever|talk]]) 22:19, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
*Hack together some type of replacement guage
**The old guage was connected to some type of ceramic temperature probe of unknown variety and was disintegrating. If we can get the same type probe it may work again, but more useful would be a digital read out

== Gas Cost Contribution ==

If you use the shop tank you are required to pay for your gas, gas is priced at '''$5/hour''' of forge use. This may change in the future after we research the cost effectiveness of a larger tank.

== How to get certified ==

Certification process will be a spot test on the contents of this page of the wiki and demonstrating that you can safely light the forge.

== Lighting the forge ==

* '''DO NOT ATTEMPT TO LIGHT THE FORGE WITH A MATCH OR LIGHTER (EVEN A LONG LIGHTER/MATCH)'''
* '''MAKE SURE THAT THE GAS HOSE IS NOT TOUCHING THE SIDE OF THE FORGE OR PASSING IN FRONT OF AN OPENING'''

To light the forge:

# Set the sign above the forge to '''HOT'''
# Open the rear door of the space if it is not already open!
# Make sure the burner valves are completely closed!!
# Turn on the valve for the propane tank
# Adjust the pressure regulator on the tank to 10PSI. - If the pressure is too high you will have to open a burner valve slightly to let some pressure out.
# Place a lit piece of paper into the forge
# Making sure the paper is still alight, slightly open the valve for the front burner and allow the forge to light
#* If the burner does not light within a few seconds turn off the valve and reposition the paper
#* If the burner still does not light, check the valve on the propane tank is open far enough
#* If the burner does not light after a second attempt '''DO NOT ATTEMPT TO LIGHT IT AGAIN''' contact the area host for instructions on how to proceed.
# Once the burner is lit adjust the valve until there is a constant feathered flame
#* If you are unable to get a constant flame do not use the forge and contact the area host for further instructions
# If you require the second burner open the valve for the rear burner 1/8th of a turn and allow it to light
# Adjust the valve to get a constant flame as you did for the first

== Important Information Regarding the Forge ==

# Carbon Steel '''ONLY'''! No other material can be placed in the forge.
# '''NO''' galvanized, painted, or otherwise coated steel in the forge.
# '''Do NOT''' poke the sides or back of the forge with your piece. The back hole is slightly higher than the bottom firebrick - please gently place your piece in and then rest it down on the bottom of the forge.
# Make sure the fuel line is '''NEVER''' touching the side of the forge.
# If the torch is sputtering there is something wrong. Try to give it a little more air and more fuel. If that doesn't work, you might be low on fuel. If it continues sputtering turn it off and alert the Area Host.
# Always assume the forge, any nearby tools, and the surrounding area is hot.

== Forge Welding/Flux Use ==

If you are going to use flux for any reason you '''MUST line the interior of the forge with non glazed floor tiles to protect the liner of the forge'''. Anyone caught not using the correct liner will have their certification revoked from the forge.

== Helpful Hints ==

* Directly under the burner is the hottest place in the forge - if you want something heated fast, place it there.
* Your steel will be as hot as it can be when it nearly matches the color of the forge around it.
* Try not to leave tools next to the forge when it is on - they will get very hot.
* Keep your tools cool by quenching often.
* If you have a question or something seems off - contact the area host.
* If you plan on using the forge for a large project you should provide your own tank
* If the tank is less than half full it may freeze during use, if this happens shutdown the forge and allow the tank to warm back up before you light the forge again.
* If the liner of the forge has a crack large enough for gas to enter, stop using the forge let the area host know.
* If you encounter an issue with the forge that requires contacting the area host you must place an out of service sign on the forge including why.

'''!!! CAUTION !!!''' Our welders are 20% duty cycle which means we can only be welding 2 minutes out of every 10 minutes at maximum settings or the welding unit may be ruined, if you weld for 2 minutes wait 8 minutes for the welder to cool.<br />
<br />
== Use ==
Flux core or gas shielded welding of steel. Welding of aluminum with the use of the spool gun.

== Notes ==
For use of the spool gun RTFM. aluminum requires use of argon as the shielding gas. The spool gun is in the black case on top of the grinder bench shelf (manual is inside case), it is set up to work once you RTFM. <br />

For regular Mig welding the knurled drive roller is intended for flux core only and seems to grind some material off the wire. This will be a maintenance issue for the gun liner and I recommend we use the knurled drive only when necessary. The 125HD is configured for use with mild steel.

== Accessories ==
Additional wire drive wheels and the large spool adapter are inside the case.<br />
'''The temperature gauge on this tool does not work, however it has been heated up to 750 C successfully, graphs and rough temperature guide to follow'''

== To-Do ==

If you find proof that the guage is not correct, then you should (if you are capable of such) hack it to be accurate. I hear that ebay sells guages. I think.
== Note ==
This saw can cut many common fabrication materials. The problem with this is there is a tendency to think it can cut anything economically. This is NOT true.<br />
<br />
'''The stock multipurpose blade is awesome, according to specifications the multipurpose blade ''can'' cut:'''<br />
Mild Steel<br />
Aluminum<br />
Wood and Wood with nails (if you cut wood please clean up the saw dust, it's a serious fire hazard in the "hot work" area of the shop)<br />
Some Plastics<br />
<br />
'''The multipurpose blade should ''not'' be used to cut:'''<br />
Hardened Steel (use a abrasive cut off wheel for any steel harder than mild steel, cut off wheels are a much more economical for cutting hard steel than damaging the $70.00 multipurpose blade)<br />
Masonry and tile products (requires optional diamond blade)<br />
== Use ==
For cutting metal stock down to useful sizes and shapes.

== Note ==
* Always adjust the upper guide to expose the thickness of your cut.
* Do not drop the bandsaw to the workpiece, always place it down on the work gently after you've chosen an appropriate weight for the material you're cutting.
* '''Never force the blade before or after you've begun your cut.'''
* Always properly secure your work for best results - there are good strategies for properly securing angle and irregular shapes.
Jay Hopkins reports as of 1/14/2013 that there is wobble in the spindle and it does not drill entirely vertically. Mike Warot and Ed Bennett verified it. It walked sideways.

== Operating Notes ==
To turn on the saw: 1) Make sure it is plugged in. This saw shares an outlet with the Johnson bandsaw. The plug is a twist-lock. Turn the plug counter-clockwise to remove from the outlet. 2) The big cutoff switch on the left of the machine needs to be in the 'on' position. 3) Turn the key on the front to the right. 4) Push the round black button on the front of the machine.

Adjust the height of the blade guide to be just above the workpiece. On the back of the saw above the blade are two knobs. The lower knob locks the guide in place. The upper knob adjusts the height of the guide.

Change speed range by moving the lever up and to the other side. Only do this when the motor is running and when the variable speed setting is at its lowest speed.

Change the variable speed setting only when the motor is running.

The angle of the table can be changed after loosening the knob on the right side of the machine and below the table. Then tilt the table by hand. You may have to adjust the height of the lower blade guide if you tilt the table far from horizontal.

== Blades ==
Installed:

== To-Do ==

Blade welder is missing the grinder motor. The welder has not been tested. The 20 amp plug/outlet may not be sufficient.

Make two replacement jaw inserts for the blade welder. These may have originally been made of bronze. They rest on pins just above the blade clamp cam. Something similar to what is in this photo. http://smg.photobucket.com/user/horteniv/media/Do%20All%20V-36/611.jpg.html

Add a miter jig which mounts to the right side of the table. A round linear bearing would allow the jig to be tilted down out of the way when not in use.

|
|The manual for model 16-2 (our saw) says to use SAE 10 motor oil. The manual for the 1612 (a slightly newer model) says SAE 20. DoAll support says use SAE 20 motor oil, which is difficult to find. ISO 68 waylube is equivalent to SAE 20 and available from Zengers in Melrose Park.
| The drain plug is at the bottom of the gear box. Remove pipe cap and fill to the top of the pipe. Takes about 1 quart.
| Changed 10/7/14 with ISO 68. Only about 2 cups of oil were drained, but no sign of a leak.

|Reeves drive shaft (oil cup)
|}

Oct. 15, 2014 Replaced thrust bearings and bearing caps for the 1/16-1/2" upper and lower guides. With the blade centered on the wheel, there is a gap of about 1/8 between the cap and the back edge of the blade. With medium heavy hand feed, the blade doesn't touch the cap and cause the bearing to turn. This may be OK, as there would be significantly more pressure from the workpiece when using the machine's mechanical feed.

Tried the 5/8-1" guides. appears that there will also be a gap between the blade and thrust bearing cap when using a 3/4" blade with the blade centered on the wheel. For the upper guide, we need 2 longer cap screws (1/4-20?) to hold the 3/4" hardened guides to the guide block and 2 shorter screws (shoulder?) to hold the guide block to the guide post. For the lower guide, 2 cap screws. not sure about the screw that holds the lower guide block in place.
