== Operation ==
Don't forget to turn the printer off when you are no longer using it.

=== Windows Drivers ===
Windows users will need to install drivers.
For everyone else, It Just Works™. Where everyone = Linux and OSX users.

=== Usable Print Area ===
200mm (X-axis) x 190mm (Y-axis) x 100mm (Z-axis)
(7.9in x 7.5in x 3.9in)

=== Host Software ===
Users of Linux, Windows, OSX will need to install the following software:
* [https://github.com/kliment/Printrun#getting-printrun Pronterface] - or [http://www.repetier.com/download/ Repeteir-Host] for manual operation of the printer as well as for starting print jobs
* [http://slic3r.org/download Slic3r] - for creating gcode (print jobs) from 3D models
* Additionally, Lulzbot provides a [http://download.lulzbot.com/AO-100/software/2012-Q2/configs/slic3r/point5mm.ini config file] for the AO-100 LulzBot. (Note: remember to change nozzle to .5 after importing the config file.)

=== Suggested Settings ===
Nozzle diameter = 0.5 mm
(Note that you will get better results with settings for .35, we are still trying to nail down wether the extruder got switched at some point and will update this when sure)

Filament diameter = 3.0 mm

COM port - ?

Data rate = 115200

Temperature (degrees C)
Extruder: 230
Bed: 110

Lulzbot's slic3r config has the infill density set at 0.75. Resulting prints are very sturdy as a result, but the filament consumption and print time go up because of this. It is recommended to turn it down to 0.15 or 0.25, and to increase the number of infill shells. Doing so should have a similar surface quality, but produce a print with significantly less mass.

=== Other Resources ===
[http://download.lulzbot.com/AO-100/documentation/2012Q3/AO-100-User_Manual.pdf The manual is available online]. A printed form of it can be found near the printer. The manual explains how to operate the printer. Read it =)

=== Filament ===
The printer is currently configured for 3mm ABS plastic. Only use this kind of plastic. Until Aeva has a chance to upgrade the extruder, PLA can damage the hot end.

=== Find Something to Print ===

[http://thingiverse.com Thingiverse] is a great place to find printable 3D models that other people have designed, and to publish your own.

== '''NEVER CUT THESE MATERIALS''' ==

* '''PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride):''' Also known as '''"vinyl"''' '''"pleather"''' or '''"artificial leather."''' Most adhesive vinyl shelf paper (e.g. Con-Tact Paper) also is PVC. Emits HCl and nasty chlorinated compounds when cut! Don't ever cut this material as it will ruin the optics, cause the metal of the machine to corrode, and ruin the motion control system.
* '''Polycarbonate:''' Also known as '''"Lexan."''' Polycarbonate is also often found as flat, sheet material. The case cover window on the laser cutter is made of Polycarbonate because polycarbonate strongly absorbs infrared radiation! This is the frequency of light the laser cutter uses to cut materials, so it is very ineffective at cutting polycarbonate. Polycarbonate can also emit flame and chlorine gas when cut, making it a poor choice for laser cutting.
* '''ABS:''' ABS does not cut well in a laser cutter. It tends to melt rather than vaporize, and has a higher chance of catching on fire and leaving behind melted gooey deposits on the vector cutting grid. It also does not engrave well (again, tends to melt). Finally, ABS emits cyanide when cut.
* '''HDPE:''' "milk bottle" plastic. It melts. It gets gooey. It catches on fire. Don't use it.
* '''PolyStyrene Foam:''' It catches fire, it melts, and only thin pieces cut. This is the #1 material that causes laser fires!!!
* '''Fiberglass:''' It's a mix of two materials that can't be cut. Glass (etch, no cut) and epoxy resin (fumes)
* '''Coated Carbon Fiber:''' Again, it's a mix of two materials. Thin carbon fiber mat can be cut, with some fraying. However, once coated with epoxy it will emit noxious fumes.
* Silhouette '''magnet paper''' (sold by Inventables by example): it likely contains chlorine. Emits HCl and nasty chlorinated compounds when cut! Don't ever cut this material as it will ruin the optics, cause the metal of the machine to corrode, and ruin the motion control system.
* '''PTFE:''', also known as '''Teflon''' or any fluorinated polymer it will releases nasty fluorinated compounds (bad for you) and sublimate then deposit on the lenses (likely destroying them).
* '''Gator foam''': foam core gets burned and eaten away compared to the top and bottom hard paper shell. Not a fantastic thing to cut, but it can be cut if watched. And the MSDS sheet says it may produce hydrogen bromide and hydrogen chloride known to degrade the optics and mechanic of the cutter
* Any other plastic with "Chlor" or "Fluor" in the name, for the same reasons as PVC and PTFE above.

== '''Test for material''' ==

Some people came up with an easy protocol to help identify unknown polymers: [http://www.nycresistor.com/2008/08/28/how-to-identify-polymers-with-burnination/ Nyc Resistor - how to identify polymers with burnination]. We don't know how reliable it is. And we can't but recommend to do that under good ventilation (outside?)

== Safe Materials ==
The laser can cut or etch. The materials that the laser can cut materials like wood, paper, cork, and some kinds of plastics. Etching can be done on almost anything, wood, cardboard, aluminum, stainless steel, plastic, marble, stone, tile, and glass.
* Cutting
** Many woods up to 1/4" thick. Composite woods like plywood contain glue, and may not laser cut as well as solid wood. Engineered woods like MDF are okay to use but may experience a higher amount of charring when cut. Be very careful about cutting oily woods, or very resinous woods as they also may catch fire.
** Paper cuts very very well on the laser cutter, and also very quickly. Thin paper and single layer card stock and cardboard are perfectly OK. Thicker cardboard, carton, and other papers also cut very well but need to be watched to make sure they don't catch fire.
** Cork cuts nicely, but the quality of the cut depends on the thickness and quality of the cork. Engineered cork has a lot of glue in it, and may not cut as well. Cork thicker than 1/4" should be avoided.
** Cast acrylic (also known as Lucite, Plexiglas, PMMA) cuts extremely well on the laser cutter, leaving a beautifully polished edge. With care, acrylic material up to 1/2" thick can be cut on the laser cutter. Extruded acrylic cuts less well and etches even worse. It tends to melt and puddle rather than vaporize.
** Delrin (POM) in thin sheets cuts and engraves very well. Delrin comes in a number of shore strengths (hardness) and the harder delrin tends to work better. Great for gears! It is possible to deeply engrave Delrin to make dies for embossing paper and leather.
** Kapton tape (Polyimide) : Works well, in thin sheets and strips like tape. 1/16" thick is about as thick as you can cut reliably.
** Mylar : Works well if it's thin. Once you get too far past 1/16" thick mylar has a tendency to warp, bubble, and curl. Gold coated mylar will not work.
** Solid Styrene : Smokes a lot when cut, but can be cut. Keep it thin (1/16")
** Depron foam: Used a lot for hobby, RC aircraft, architectural models, and toys. 1/4" cuts nicely, with a smooth edge. Must be constantly monitored when cutting.
** Cloth (leather, suede, felt, hemp, cotton, polyester, but NEVER vinyl or pleather-- see above) They all cut well. Leather is very hard to cut, but can be if it's thinner than a belt (call it 1/8")
** Magnetic Sheet material cuts beautifully (make SURE it does NOT contain chlorine, see above)
** NON-CHLORINE containing rubber is fine for cutting. Natural rubber engraves but leaves a dark sticky residue that doesn't affect stamps if the piece is engraved deeply enough.
** Carbon fiber mats/weave that has not yet had epoxy applied can be cut, very slowly. You must not cut carbon fiber that has been coated!!
* Etching: all the above can be etched, in some cases very deeply. In addition, you can etch:
** Glass (green seems to work best) .. looks sandblasted. Only FLAT GLASS can be engraved in our cutter. No round or cylindrical items.
** Ceramic tile
** Anodized aluminum ( vaporizes the anodization away )
** Painted/coated metals ( vaporizes the paint away )
** Stone : Marble, Granite, Soapstone, Onyx. Gets a white "textured" look when etched
* Marking
There is an expensive coating called 'cermark'. This marking compound costs $100 for a small bottle, and must be diluted with ethanol and applied to metal (not ceramics or stone) before being etched to leave behind a permanent dark black mark.
== Air assist ==
Air assist is used for vector cutting to have nice traces and avoid your material to burn. However some people like to have it disabled for raster jobs. The best is to use the pressure regulator on the left of the machine to put it on/off. Don't forget to put it off when you've finished and you don't need it while doing your settings, that's just making our air compressor work too much. The pressure regulator has no adjustable settings. It is either on or off.

If you hear a hiss behind the machine while it is cutting, it means that the valve is closed and that ''Air assist will not work'''… You have to stop the job and then:
* Hit '''config (2)'''
* Left key until "Air assist vector" put On with '''Up''' key (You shouldn't have to put Off here as you just have to put the compressor off if you really need that)
* Left key until "Air assist raster" put On with '''Up''' key.

You should not have to touch these settings, especially because it confuses the users and it can make them destroy their material or cause fire. Default settings should be On and On for both.

Check the regulator for accumulated water from time to time. Place a container (and maybe some paper towels) under the regulator and vent accumulated water from the bottom using the small petcock. If too much water accumulates in the regulator, it may flow through the air hose and into the machine, spraying onto the bed/material.
== Notes on Software Compatibility ==

Adobe Illustrator and the epilog drivers don't always work great together. If you're experiencing any of the following, there is a simple fix:

# Job runs, but it's an empty run. Laser head moves once then completes, even though raster vs vector is correctly configured and stokes are set to 0.072pt.
# Updating the media size in the epilog print driver does not update the size in Illustrator's print dialog, unless you reopen settings and press 'OK' in epilog again another time or two.
# Open pressing print in Illustrator, you get a message about "nothing to print in selected layers" or similar.
# Media size entered in epilog driver is read as the reverse by Illustrator (e.g. 24x12 is seen as 12x24 by Illustrator)

It seems epilog's driver doesn't play nicely with Illustrator, and Illustrator interfaces with the print driver a lot because it micromanages a lot of things.
If your document is saved as a .AI with PDF compatibility, simply right-click your AI file and open with Adobe Reader instead of Adobe Illustrator, and print from there.

Adobe Reader has a much more "dumbed down" print dialog that just works with Epilog's driver. You don't have to resave your .AI as .PDF, as Adobe Reader can read .AI files saved in compatibility mode (that's the default).

== Rotary Attachment ==

'''NB: Always return the machine back to the default configuration with a cutting bed after use.'''

=== Installing Attachment ===

'''Do not attempt to install the rotary attachment without ensuring that the cutting head AND autofocus plunger will clear it. It is extremely easy to damage the autofocus plunger and/or crash the head in the Y dimension, which will burn the motor out and make a lot of people sad.'''

# Turn machine on
# Disable X/Y
# Open front cover
# Lower bed almost to the bottom of the machine while still allowing the catch tray to be removed
# '''Turn machine off'''
# Flip up rulers and remove cutting bed
# Remove slide out catch tray
# Install the attachment locating it in the 3 holes in the bottom of the bed '''DO NOT CONNECT PLUG YET'''
# Make sure the Y axis will clear the top of the attachment, if it will not turn the machine on and lower the bed further making sure to turn it off afterwards
# Connect the attachment cable to the connector in the back of the bed
# Turn the machine on - the machine will zero home over the top of the attachment

Reverse steps to uninstall.

=== Usage notes ===

* '''DO NOT USE AUTO FOCUS'''
* 0,0 is '''TOP LEFT'''
* Y axis is wrapped around the piece
* Set Y size to circumference of piece - measure with soft tape or string/ribbon/etc
* Make sure to set print size in driver to same as art board in illustrator

== Authorizing Users ==

The laser cutter now has [[:Category:Recommended laser authorizers|recommended authorizers]]. Recommended authorizers will periodically conduct authorization sessions for PS:1 members wishing to use the laser engraver. These sessions will be announced on the members' listserv as early as is practicable. A recommended authorizer can follow the instructions on [[Laser Engraver Certification]] to enable logins to the laser engraver computer.
== Authorization Checklist ==

This is here as a checklist for proctors to follow when authorizing people. It can also help remind you of things after you are authorized. Just reading this does not authorizing you.

* How to get authorized
** Watch [https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/pumping-station-one the forum] for announcements or ask on that forum if no announcements have been made for a few weeks.

* Authorization group size
** About 4 (each person will run a job)

* Safety
** Safety Glasses
** Hearing Protection
** Dust Protection

* What can go wrong (and what to do)

* How does machine work
** Axes
** Motors
** Spindle

* Daily Maintenance
** Spindle bearing warm up.
*** The "C5" warm up routine should be run on the first job of the day. It runs the spindle at 3 speeds for 3 minutes each to warm up the bearings. (When it doubt, warm it up)

* Extended Maintenance
** See maintenance schedule file under documentation.
** Grease the racks
** Use Grease type: Manual states any type is safe there is some in the draw

* Machine Control
** Turn on sequence
*** Log into computer
*** Turn on Shopbot big red and yellow twist switch (see zeroing below)
*** Insert Key and turn to "engaged" position.
*** The VDF should light up, the spindle fan should be on.
*** Start "Shopbot 3" program.
*** Open Tools...Spindle RPM Control menu (to allow RPM control)
**** Make sure collet is tightened or no tool or nut is installed
**** Run the C5 warm up routine
** Jogging
*** Keypad
*** Arrow Keys + Page Up, Page Down (ctrl for fast jog)

* CAM Software
** Vectric V Carve
** Just the basics...separate class for advanced V Carve.
** Online videos

* Running your Job
** Zeroing X & Y
*** With machine off slow push gantry towards X0 until it hits hard stops (optional)
*** Turn on big red switch while still holding gantry.
*** Jog machine away from X0 Y0 so machine will find switches
*** Click X, Y zero button.
** Zeroing Z (top of work piece)
*** Jog over your work piece
*** Place Z zero plate on work piece under the bit
*** Place clip on bit
*** Test connection by touching plate to bit and watch for light #1 to light
*** Click the Z 0 button (it will touch off twice!!!)
*** If Z is critical, you may want to verify that your bit has been zeroed properly by using a "MZ,0" command over the surface you have zeroed the bit to. Repeat zeroing if not correct.

* Waste Board and clamping

* Collets, Bits, Feeds and Speeds
** Feeds and Speeds
*** Use a Cut Load Calculator to determine which feeds and speeds you should be using for your specific bits. An overview is avaialble at: [https://groups.google.com/d/msg/pumping-station-one/vUF3iKRQ9yc/_qNnLXzZ3QcJ]
** Collets
*** We currently have collets for 1/2, 1/4, 3/16 and 1/8" shank bits.
*** Try to keep them clean and store them away from dust between uses. Dust between the gaps will produce runout. The drawer mounted under the Shopbot is the right place to store these items.
*** If the collet nuts are not threading smoothly try cleaning the threads with a small brush, spindle threads as well.
** Bits
*** Use bits designed for the material you are cutting. Don't just steal a bits from the Bridgeport. They won't do a good job and will probably overheat.
*** For cutting out things, use the smallest appropriate bit. Using a 1/2" bit to cutout will just create a lot of mess.

* ShopBot should not be used for...
** Metals other than aluminum
** Cutting anything that requires coolant or lubricant (it will ruin the waste board)
** Ripping lumber (use the table saw)
** Thickness Planning (Use the planner if you can)
** Drilling holes with drill bits (a small end mill works better)

* How to leave the machine (be excellent)
** Machine
*** Home the machine to X0, Y0
*** Turn off both switches
*** Remove Key
*** Remove bit and collet.
*** Place both collet wrenches on top of electronics box
*** clean up work area
*** Smooth out waste board if you puckered it at all.
*** Check if the dust collector needs to be emptied

** Post a picture please :-)

== Pre-Flight Checklist ==
* Did you home the machine?
* Is the dust collect gate open?
* Are you sure you have the right X, Y orientation for your file and material?
* Did you set the proper X,Y zero for your work piece on the Shopbot.
* Is the correct bit installed and tight?
* Is the key in and turned on?
* Is the dust skirt set right so it does not get smashed.
* Is Z zero set to the work top?
* Is the touch plate and clip returned.
* Is the material properly secured
* Safety glasses, hearing protection on.
* Start the job with the E-Stop ready to hit.
* Turn on dust collector ( I like to wait so I can hear that things sound right on the shopbot before turning on the collector)
|Updated VCarve Post Processor
|Previously, installed new Post Processor to preset an Abort / Retry / Ignore dialog box when the spindle is started but doesn't spin up. Usual culprit is that a job is started when the the interlock is disabled, which results in the non-spinning bit crashing into the workpiece. Abort stops the job. Today, fixed Retry code. If you power on the VFD and the motor start is enabled, the VFD refuses to start. So I've re-programmed the Retry button to stop the VFD, wait 2 seconds, start the VFD, wait 2 more seconds, and check again to see if it is running. The Ignore button actually acts as Retry because we don't want someone clicking through this dialog box and damaging the machine. NOTE: The Aspire PC in the shop also has this Post Processor, but if you use Aspire, VCarve Pro, etc. on your personal computer, you will need the latest Post Processor to support this safety check.
|Updated ShopBot software
|Did upgrade from 3.8.14 to 3.8.26. Installed latest firmware on ShopBot controller. (This was mandatory.) Two features of interest: Fixed occasional erractic behavior after repeated Stops and Resumes (and Nudges or Command Insertions). Reduced liklihood of Keypad lockup.
|-
|}

== Outstanding Maintenance Issues ==

=== Lack of True E-Stop ===
As shipped, the ShopBot PRS does not support an Emergency Stop. This could be hacked, but it runs the risk of damaging the machine if engaged in a non-emergency situation. Suggested solution: Installing a 10A double pole 24V coil DIN mount relay, and powering the coil via the 24V supply through a normally closed E-Stop button. One pole will disconnect the 63V stepper motor current. One pole will break the control signal that enables the VFD and will cause the VFD to brake to a stop.

=== Automatic Dust Collection ===
The ShopBot has +5V TTL outputs that could be used to trigger automatic dust collection (when the spindle goes live) and/or a warning light (when the gantry is enabled to move.)

=== Limit Switch Issues ===
Every time you start the ShopBot, it resets itself so that the limit switches are disabled! You can turn them on (if memory serves) with the Values -> Input Switch Assignment menu item. Limit switches are really useful - but they need to be enabled. When they are, they will stop manual jogging when the limit is hit (although pressing the key again will let you continue moving the gantry) and they will also stop a running job (but give you the option of ignoring the limits.)

I found a couple more problems when testing all the limits. When I took the gantry to X maximum, the dust collector hose pulled off! I put it back on, but I'm not sure how stable this is. Also, when I originally set the Y maximum and minimum, I wanted as much spindle travel as possible. But it appears that if you're at the Y max and move in the X direction, you can hit the middle support with the dust collector boot. We've got several inches Y travel beyond the nominal 48", so we may want to look into reducing this to clear the supports.
== Authorization Checklist ==

This is here as a checklist for proctors to follow when authorizing people. It can also help remind you of things after you are authorized. Just reading this does not authorizing you.

* How to get authorized
** Watch [https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/pumping-station-one the forum] for announcements or ask on that forum if no announcements have been made for a few weeks.

* Authorization group size
** About 4 (each person will run a job)

* Safety
** Safety Glasses
** Hearing Protection
** Dust Protection

* What can go wrong (and what to do)

* How does machine work
** Axes
** Motors
** Spindle

* Daily Maintenance
** Spindle bearing warm up.
*** The "C5" warm up routine should be run on the first job of the day. It runs the spindle at 3 speeds for 3 minutes each to warm up the bearings. (When it doubt, warm it up)

* Extended Maintenance
** See maintenance schedule file under documentation.
** Grease the racks
** Use Grease type: Manual states any type is safe there is some in the draw

* Machine Control

* CAM Software
** Vectric V Carve
** Just the basics...separate class for advanced V Carve.
** Online videos

* Running your Job

* Waste Board and clamping

== Pre-Flight Checklist ==
=== Lack of True E-Stop ===

=== Automatic Dust Collection ===
The ShopBot has +5V TTL outputs that could be used to trigger automatic dust collection (when the spindle goes live) and/or a warning light (when the gantry is enabled to move.)

=== Limit Switch Issues ===

== Authorization Checklist ==

This is here as a checklist for proctors to follow when authorizing people. It can also help remind you of things after you are authorized. Just reading this does not authorizing you.

* How to get authorized
** Watch [https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/pumping-station-one the forum] for announcements or ask on that forum if no announcements have been made for a few weeks.

* Authorization group size
** About 4 (each person will run a job)

* Safety
** Safety Glasses
** Hearing Protection
** Dust Protection

* What can go wrong (and what to do)

* How does machine work
** Axes
** Motors
** Spindle

* Daily Maintenance
** Spindle bearing warm up.
*** The "C5" warm up routine should be run on the first job of the day. It runs the spindle at 3 speeds for 3 minutes each to warm up the bearings. (When it doubt, warm it up)

* Extended Maintenance
** See maintenance schedule file under documentation.
** Grease the racks
** Use Grease type: Manual states any type is safe there is some in the draw

* Machine Control

* CAM Software
** Vectric V Carve
** Just the basics...separate class for advanced V Carve.
** Online videos

* Running your Job

* Waste Board and clamping

== Pre-Flight Checklist ==
|-
|Ryan Pierce
|Updated ShopBot software
|Did upgrade from 3.8.14 to 3.8.26. Installed latest firmware on ShopBot controller. (This was mandatory.) Two features of interest: Fixed occasional erractic behavior after repeated Stops and Resumes (and Nudges or Command Insertions). Reduced liklihood of Keypad lockup.
|-
|}

== Outstanding Maintenance Issues ==

=== Lack of True E-Stop ===

=== Automatic Dust Collection ===
The ShopBot has +5V TTL outputs that could be used to trigger automatic dust collection (when the spindle goes live) and/or a warning light (when the gantry is enabled to move.)

=== Limit Switch Issues ===

== Authorization Checklist ==

This is here as a checklist for proctors to follow when authorizing people. It can also help remind you of things after you are authorized. Just reading this does not authorizing you.

* How to get authorized
** Watch [https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/pumping-station-one the forum] for announcements or ask on that forum if no announcements have been made for a few weeks.

* Authorization group size
** About 4 (each person will run a job)

* Safety
** Safety Glasses
** Hearing Protection
** Dust Protection

* What can go wrong (and what to do)

* How does machine work
** Axes
** Motors
** Spindle

* Daily Maintenance
** Spindle bearing warm up.
*** The "C5" warm up routine should be run on the first job of the day. It runs the spindle at 3 speeds for 3 minutes each to warm up the bearings. (When it doubt, warm it up)

* Extended Maintenance
** See maintenance schedule file under documentation.
** Grease the racks
** Use Grease type: Manual states any type is safe there is some in the draw

* Machine Control

* CAM Software
** Vectric V Carve
** Just the basics...separate class for advanced V Carve.
** Online videos

* Running your Job

* Waste Board and clamping

== Pre-Flight Checklist ==
|-
|Ryan Pierce
|Updated ShopBot software
|Did upgrade from 3.8.14 to 3.8.26. Installed latest firmware on ShopBot controller. (This was mandatory.) Two features of interest: Fixed occasional erractic behavior after repeated Stops and Resumes (and Nudges or Command Insertions). Reduced liklihood of Keypad lockup.
|-
|}

== Outstanding Maintenance Issues ==

=== Lack of True E-Stop ===

=== Automatic Dust Collection ===
The ShopBot has +5V TTL outputs that could be used to trigger automatic dust collection (when the spindle goes live) and/or a warning light (when the gantry is enabled to move.)

=== Limit Switch Issues ===
