Welcome to the Pumping Station: One, Chicago's premiere hackerspace.
Your Role (as a Member)
As a member of Pumping Station: One, you aren't just buying shared use of a workshop, you're joining a community of people who love learning and making things, and sharing their knowledge with others. That learning and sharing ethos is what makes a hackerspace great, so embrace it to the greatest extent that you can.

This hackerspace belongs to and is controlled by its members, so by joining up, It's your hackerspace. If you see something wrong or broken, fix it. (or if you don't know how, bring it to the attention of someone who does and offer to help; you'll learn something!) If you want something to work differently, make it happen (the board, area hosts, and other long time members can usually be of help here). You as a member are allowed to be at the space any time! Talk to a board member to get your keycode, fob, or key. We'll work out which one you get.

Member Meetings
Every Tuesday night at 8pm we have an open house. You probably attended one of these before you became a member. Everyone is encouraged to come on Tuesday nights to see what other people are working on and share ideas. It's always full of activity and lots of fun.

Before the open house, we have a meeting of our Board of Directors. It's mostly about facility maintenance, paying bills, and whatever other issues we're dealing with at the moment. If you don't want to attend but want to stay in the loop, you can read the meeting minutes.

Orientation Program
You're required to complete the PS1 Orientation Canvas course within 3 months of joining if you haven't already! Please see Orientation Program Policy.

At your first meeting
The first time you attend a meeting, be sure to do a couple things:
* Sign a waiver before you arrive- VERY IMPORTANT everyone who walks in the door must sign a waiver, including guests.
* Introduce yourself at the meeting.
* Get a tour - an official tour leader should be announced during the meeting.

Voting
Most decisions are made by a vote of the members. Here's how voting works:
* All members may propose votes.
* Only members in good standing may vote.
* As a required step, the vote proposal is run past the board of directors for proper wording, etc. - this helps prevent people from disagreeing with your proposal because it's written poorly.
* The proposing member places the item before the membership (BOTH on mailing list and during a meeting) at least 7 days prior to a meeting.
* During this period, people may read and discuss the proposal, and offer their own counter-proposals.
* At the next scheduled meeting, the proposal and any counter proposals are voted on.

Board of Directors
Pumping Station: One is a direct democracy of its full members, but most of the heavy lifting is delegated to the board of directors . They pay the bills and coordinate things behind the scenes. If you have any questions, you can talk to one of them during a meeting or email them at info@pumpingstationone.org.

Facility Operations
The people primarily responsible for the various shops in the hackerspace are the Area Hosts. They are volunteers who maintain their areas and frequently certify people on their area's tools.

Tools
You must be authorized before you can use many tools. A list of authorized members is listed for each power tool on the item's Equipment page.

If you break a tool, the WORST thing you can do is to make it look like it's not broken and leave before anyone notices. Someone could be killed. What you should do, in order of preference, is:
* fix it, if you are capable
* put a "broken" sign on it if you can't fix it, with notes about who you are and what you found.
* tell the mailing list what is broken about the tool and figure out how to fix it.
Accidents happen, and you will not be called out or derided for a simple accident.

Interested in learning?
Come by any of the events on the calendar. A few things require you to be a member or to pay a parts fee. Read the fine print.

Interested in leading?
# Pick a topic
# Gauge interest from the membership
# Pick a date
# Talk to a Board member to get your event put on the calendar or email info @ pumpingstationone.org for help

For more extensive advice read New events

Login into computers and Wiki
Your PS1 credentials will be provisioned when you create your member account. These credentials are shared among all PS1 services.

You can reset your password by clicking "Forgot Password" when logging into PS1 services.

Managing my membership
How do I re-join Ps:One?
If your membership has lapsed or is suspended and you want to become a member again, first log into your account in Wild Apricot using your email. Once you are logged in, you can input your payment methods and membership type going to the Join Us section.

How do I get a key-fob?
To get a key fob you can:
* attend a Member Meeting and asking a Board member for one - they will help you input your fob number into your wild apricot account.
* take one from the bucket near the front door and input your fob number into your wild apricot account (wait 30-60 minutes for this fob to be functional).
* buy your own 125khz RFID token (rings, cards, implants...).
* (maybe) buy one from the gum-ball machine near the bathroom in electronics. You will need 2 quarters (please, leave the empty ball on top of the machine afterwards so we can refill it).

How do I activate a keyfob?
*log in to the Member Database - https://membership.pumpingstationone.org/login
*make sure you have an active PS1 user account
*click "view profile" - https://membership.pumpingstationone.org/Sys/Profile
*click "edit profile"
*go to the "RFID Tag" field
*find your tag number - the red tags PS1 provides have their numbers printed on them. If you have an unnumbered tag you can find a USB RFID reader around the space. Install the reader in computer, open a text editor, and scan your tag to get the number.
*input your tag number including all leading zeros, separate multiple tags with commas.
*click save
*wait at least 15-60 minutes and test your tag on either the front or back door
*thank Ron Olson for being awesome and getting this system running - if you have issues please email info@pumpingstationone.org, or get on the slack #systems-group channel for assistance.

How do I change my membership level?
If you want to change your membership level, please send us an email to info@pumpingstationone.org letting us know.

Can I keep my authorizations and ID checks if I cancel my membership?
We allow members to cancel and rejoin PS1 at their leisure. Generally we try to maintain user accounts for as long as possible, but in order to maintain our membership database we may remove accounts that are expired for longer than 6 months. Members that have come back after some time away are strongly encouraged to do an authorization as a refresher to get up to speed on new equipment and/or best practices. Having said this, if you haven't been gone for too long, let us know and we might be able to let you keep your ID checks and authorizations.

Whenever you are ready to re-join the space, you can follow the same steps you did the first time you did. This steps are described in the the Join section of the website. Please, use the same email you used the first time you joined.

How do I terminate my membership?
It depends: are you currently paying with Paypal or with your credit card in Wild Apricot? Depending on your payment method, you will have to read one of the options below.

Terminating Wild Apricot membership
To stop your membership, you only need to log into Wild Apricot, go to "Invoices and payments" in your profile and click on "Stop recurring payments".

If you do this, your membership will be terminated after the next Renewal due date plus the grace period.

Terminating Paypal membership
You have to log into your Paypal account and stop recurring payments from there. We can't stop them for you.

How do I change the credit card on my account?
To change your payment info, you first need to log into Wild Apricot, go to "Invoices and payments" in your profile and click on "Stop recurring payments".

Then, you can input your new payment method and membership type by going to the Join Us section.

Description
Canvas is a learning management system (LMS) that PS1 has partially implemented to assist with documenting and to some degree, automating the tool and equipment authorization process and documentation.

Canvas can be visited at https://canvas.pumpingstationone.org

It is early in the deployment process. Ask Kathryn Born (kathryn.born@pumpingstationone.org) and Gary Newhouse for more information, or to participate.

How do I get a password for Canvas?
You first need to be in our new member management software, Wild Apricot.
Login using the Active Directory username you created in Wild Apricot.
You can reset your AD password here via email - https://selfservice.pumpingstationone.org/
This is not and does not affect your Wild Apricot login, however.

Feb 25, 2019: The Canvas login has been modified to use your "New AD" username instead of your email address to reduce confusion. You can check your "New AD" username on your Wild Apricot profile. You can reset the password to your AD/Canvas account from https://selfservice.pumpingstationone.org

For more information about various PS1 usernames and logins, see the appropriate wiki pages for Username and Login.

Technical Overview
Canvas is currently hosted in Azure as a prebuilt Bitnami container. It connects back to the space via a site-to-site VPN for authentication.

Azure Deployment
Deployment uses the Bitnami Canvas LMS stack - https://bitnami.com/stack/canvaslms

Canvas currently runs in the <code>bitnami-canvaslms-534e-rgroup</code> resource group on Azure

The following components drive Canvas:

Azure VPN
The Azure VPN is used to facilitate LDAP authentication against Active_Directory.

Azure Backups
Azure is configured to make daily incremental backups of Canvas. As of 11/1/18 it contains 4 months of backups totaling 70GB.

Authentication
Canvas uses LDAP to authenticate against onsite Active Directory. Canvas user information is populated by a PowerShell script that runs on DC1.pumpingstationone.org every 15 minutes as a Windows Scheduled Task. (Script should really be hosted on the PS1 github)
* Sign a waiver - VERY IMPORTANT everyone who walks in the door must sign a waiver, including guests.
* Introduce yourself at the meeting.
* Get a tour - an official tour leader should be announced during the meeting.

Welcome to the Pumping Station: One, Chicago's premiere hackerspace. We do woodworking, software, metalworking, art, crafts, electronics, chemistry, power wheel racing, TARDIS building, green technology, nanotechnology, tinkering, dismantling of robots, assembling of robots, music, biotechnology, CNC, and the many ways all those subjects (and more) intersect and collaborate.

You're required to go to the PS1 Orientation class within 3 months of joining if you haven't already! Please see Orientation Program Policy.

How do I get authorized to use all this equipment?
You would need to be a member first, then it depends on the tool or equipment you're talking about. Short answer: look for an equipment label on things, which leads you to a wiki page about the thing, that tells you how to get authorized on that thing. You can also ask the area's Area Host or Volunteer Authorizer, but that information should also be on the wiki page for the thing. https://wiki.pumpingstationone.org/How_Do_I_Get_Authorized%3F

How about a tour?
We have an open house every Tuesday at 8:00pm, the public or anyone interested is welcome to attend if you sign our liability waiver and conduct yourself to the standards that our membership agreement demands of members and guests. Large groups could contact the PR Director, email pr@pumpingstationone.org, for tours.

Do people make 3D printed guns
No, not here. This is a really common, complicated, awful question with an easy answer. No. Making guns or firearms in a shared workspace is illegal (Federal felony) because a place that makes guns (firearms) has to be a federally-licensed firearms manufacturing facility. PS1 does not and will not have that license. You can't make a gun here. Secondly, firearms aren't allowed at the space by common agreement. Don't even bring one in that you've made yourself, or as concealed carry, even if you have a concealed carry permit. Anything you've heard about how you can, legally, make your own guns with 3d printers or anything else applies to YOUR house with YOUR tools, but it doesn't belong here in any way. You can make nerf guns, squirt guns, t-shirt cannons, foam cosplay props or pumpkin catapults if you are reasonable and safe going about it.

Are hackers hacking election results, sending me spam email, stealing credit card info or copying my Facebook profile?
No. That is the wrong kind of hacker. The kind of hacker we encourage here is the kind of person who is exploring the worlds of science, technology, art and culture to learn and express

Hi! I found you online, how can I learn more about your organization?
You're already on our wiki, so you aren't doing bad. Our regular web site is at http://pumpingstationone.org and we're on all the usual social media things, except SnapChat maybe. In person, you can come to an open house on Tuesdays at 8 pm or an orientation held (usually) the fourth Sunday of each month at 4 pm. Look for monthly orientations on Meetup.com or our event calendar, on the regular web site.

* Read up on us and other hackerspaces at http://hackerspaces.org

Frequently Asked Questions

How to Join
You can join by following the steps , which are, in short:

* Check out the join page, https://wiki.pumpingstationone.org/wiki/Join

But you've got concerns, let's address them:

* I have a project I need to get done on a very short time frame, is there any way to get in before next Tuesday?

Sorry, no. Unfortunately we are not a job shop, fab lab or tool rental company. You're going to need some patience. We are 100% volunteer run. Likewise, no day passes, no corporate memberships shared between several people. Not a good fit for this kind of place.

* How do I get authorized to use the laser cutter?

The laser cutter is our most popular tool. There may be an authorization session on the Events calendar, or one may be in the process of forming. There are a few recommended authorizers for the laser. Check the wiki page for the laser, as you would for any tool. There are more volunteer authorizers for laser cutters than ever before; scheduling a time won’t be hard.

How do I get authorized on tools?
# Check if there is a Canvas course on that tool and complete it with passing scores.
## Check this wiki for a page on the tool you're interested in. Look for an equipment label on the tool you're interested in for a QR code that will take you to its wiki page.
# Contact the area host and area authorizers through email, discourse, or Discord to schedule a convenient time for an in person authorization.
# Make sure you understand the equipment well to avoid damaging it, yourself, and others. Let your authorizer know you want to meet with them or another volunteer again if you feel unsure in your abilities.
# Make sure the authorizer adds to your Wild Apricot profile that you're authorized on the equipment.
# Have fun and follow the scout principle of leaving your newly acquired tool area cleaner than you found it.

Most/many serious tools require authorization. This was formerly referred to as certification and some wiki pages still refer to it as that. Authorization requirements vary from thing to thing, sometimes they have prerequisites and sometimes can only be done by one or a small set of authorizers.
Pumping Station: One Is ...
A Do-ocracy
That means whoever's doing something is the person who decides how it gets done. If you want to do something, you can basically Just Fucking Do It.

An organization of individuals doing their own thing
"Pumping Station: One" doesn't do anything besides pay the bills. Any group projects, building/planning new space facilities, etc. all gets done because an ordinary member thought it was important, got people excited about it, and followed through.

Entirely run by volunteers
Our Board of Directors, people offering training on the equipment, and anyone who looks like they're doing anything remotely official are all volunteers. That means if you ask them nicely for something they'll probably help you, but you should do what you can to make their job easier.

Except the people we pay to do things, who are probably not members. We pay a cleaning service to clean the bathrooms and an electrician to run wires. The building owner pays roofers to roof and something is going on with the front of the building right now.

How to get Involved
All of these are optional ways you can get involved at PS:One.

* Join one of the Email Lists, if you're so inclined.
* Volunteering at PS:One
* Contact one of the Area Hosts to discuss project ideas, get certified on some of the equipment, or anything else you might need.
* Teach a class
* Skills Exchange: List of members, what skills they can offer, and which they hope to attain.
* Project Incubator: We come up with a bunch of random ideas. Let's try to write them down so we'll be more likely to remember them.
Day of the Vote
Date the Board has assigned for the vote. The Day of the Vote is the day the vote closes.

Background
As we grow the small metal area we want to encourage more group activities which require more space in order to accommodate everyone’s ceramic parts. Our current method of piecemeal firings is slow and creates long queue times which is detrimental to people learning the craft. The kilns we have are older, inefficient and limited in size and capacity. In the recent past we’ve had parts fail in the kiln and issues with our temperature control. A larger professional grade kiln would increase the ability of members to do larger projects, encourage members to take part, and draw more members to the space. Larger kilns are also typically front loading which is safer and easier to use compared to our current top loaders.
Brand new kilns are very expensive. The opportunity to purchase a used kiln has presented itself. The model that is for sale is an L & L EL2436 for $4900 . The price for a new one is $23,840 (before tax). This kiln would be much larger (2’ x 2’ x 3’ of internal space), more dependable, allow for better temperature control, and fire to hotter temperatures regularly (2350F, cone 10 in ceramics).

Cone 10 (Why it’s good and hard to find)
Cones are temperatures that ceramics are fired to. Cone 10 is the standard for functional ware because this high temperature firing generally makes clay almost completely impermeable to water. Most smaller and hobbyist kilns cannot reach cone 10. Even mid range kilns which claim they can reach cone 10 are often not designed to do so on a regular basis. This kiln is designed for it. It has thicker fire brick (better insulation allows temps to rise more easily) and more power density. Reaching cone 10 will allow us to make more durable work for everyday use (bowls, mugs, plates, etc.). This over-design also means that the kiln will stand up better to the abuse a makerspace inevitably puts on equipment.

Small metals currently has three small kilns. Up to two of them could be removed and possibly sold, freeing up space and slightly offsetting the cost of purchase. There is room for this kiln under the hood in the small metals area.
The seller has already been contacted by the area host about the possibility of purchase and a meeting happened on 03/10/2024. The seller is willing to wait the 7 days required from posting of a vote proposal until the vote occurs.
